Give me one for reason why I shouldn't buy a pram that costs more than our car?

PFB is due in spring next year.

Today DP and I ventured into John Lewis to have a look at the prams and kind of fell in love with the Silver Cross Dune Dream - price tag of £1,430.

Our car cost £1,200 2 years ago 🥴

I used to be absolutely obsessed with the stokke prams and thought I'd got over that, now I'm back in silly price land.

GAH, help me!!

Baby will pram refuse and scream every time you put them in it until 7 months and then 7 months later you will use a stroller because it’s easier.

LittleBearPad · 26/09/2022 07:42

When did everything go grey! Even bugaboos which were all sorts of colours are now grey

FrodisCapering · 26/09/2022 07:43

I had an UppaBaby Vista and loved it. It doesn't get used that much now, as youngest is 2.

I wanted one that could be used as a double (I knew I wanted another one in quick succession even when pregnant with my first).

It was quite expensive but not as much as the one you mention.
I do recommend getting a good one because you'll use it a lot.
We use a cheap pushchair on holidays and can really tell the difference!!

Hamserfan · 26/09/2022 07:45

That is a lot of money. I had a lovely mamas and papas pushchair that laid almost flat and had a separate hard carry cot. Folded into a long thinnish shape and a brilliant carrying handle on the side for going on the bus or in the boot. Second baby I bought the carrycot second hand but only used it a handful of times.
Long waffle to say think about what works for you and there are indeed better things to spend the money on - swimming lessons, tutoring, clubs for a hobby, a pension for your child

TooHotToTangoToo · 26/09/2022 07:45

Because once it's been shit on, puked all over, food and heaven knows what has been ground into it, you'll wonder on what planet you were on when spent that much cash on a pram!

Why not buy a cheaper one, and put the remaining money into a trust fund for your dc, it'll be better used there.

donquixotedelamancha · 26/09/2022 07:47

you'll have changed to a light-weight buggy by the time the baby is eight or nine months.

This. Buy a cheap, second hand pram and at 6 months buy a really good stroller.

Hamserfan · 26/09/2022 07:50

Forgot to say it also had fabric covers and straps that could easily be removed for washing. Because yes there was vomit the occasional spit up, poonami and mashed up snack to think of 🤣🤣

RoseDog · 26/09/2022 07:50

Because you'll need to buy a basic stroller because you got to town and realised you've left the expensive pram at home and the stroller is much more convenient!

ehb102 · 26/09/2022 08:10

I had a chum who bought one of these. She didn't drive. Goodness! It was heavy. A nightmare to get on buses. Not great for one handed pushing either.

If you can hold a baby under one arm and fold it. It's the one for you.

I am an Out n About Nipper fan. Goes through doors, can shove a car seat on the frame, handle goes up and down to adjust for height, light, easy to fold, works in town or country. I like them so much ( bought some young friends one.

Katela18 · 26/09/2022 08:43

I've just looked and the first thing I noticed is how tiny and crap the wheels are! If you walk at all they will be a nightmare unless on solid pavement (I speak from experience). I returned my expensive pram and bought a mamas and papas own brand for about £500. With both my babies they have been in a £50 fold up buggy before 18 months because prams are frankly, a pain in the arse. Really heavy and cumbersome! Keep you money it's much better spent elsewhere 😀

ILikeTheOrangeAndILikeTheIgloo · 26/09/2022 08:50

Because in less than a years time you’ll end up with a Maclaren.

Hoppinggreen · 26/09/2022 08:52

Because you will use it for 6 months before switching to a cheap fold up buggy

IncompleteSenten · 26/09/2022 08:59

Because £1000 in a child bank account thing will benefit your child.

A pram costing £1000 won't.

I'd rather have more money to give my child when they go to uni/leave home/as a 21st birthday gift/ for a car / whatever than less money while I show them the picture of a pram I wheeled them round in for a few months after they were born.

FlounderingFruitcake · 26/09/2022 09:09

I don’t really get what it’s supposed to be good for… it’s got tiny city wheels but combined with a heavy frame like you’d usually get on the more off road types. So it’ll be crap on public transport, a pain when flying, it’ll get stuck in the mud if the grass it wet. It’s not so much the cost as it just doesn’t seem particularly good. Pushing it a shop tells you nothing as well, of course it’ll glide well with no weight in it and on a totally smooth flat surface.

GodspeedJune · 26/09/2022 09:09

We’ve just bought the silver cross reef for our first baby.

Expensive but if we use it every day for 2-3 years then it’s not so bad. Even better if you re-use it for subsequent children. I’ve got friends using their original pram for 2nd & 3rd babies.

Long awaited IVF baby and although I’m usually happy to buy second hand, I’ve found with baby things I just want to buy new.

ReadyForPumpkins · 26/09/2022 09:19

You spend money where you want to. I bought a Bugaboo Cameleon new for our PFB. I used it for both my children and didn't get rid of it until nearly 10 years later. I had a Maclaren umbrella fold for the plane, but always use the Bugaboo at home. I used it with the baby car seat, cot basket and seat. I don't think it's a waste of money. The key though is that the pram must fit into your car easily.

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 26/09/2022 09:27

Those wheels look terrible! Another one who can’t see why on earth that costs that much money.

We went through SO many prams and pushchairs over the years. Even though we had prams that turned into strollers, they were never as easy to use as an actual stroller. Agree with PP, get a normal priced pram and then you’ve got money to change to a decent stroller in a year or so if you want one. However you imagine you’ll be using the pram, or how much the baby will be in it, you’re guaranteed to be wrong and end up needing something completely different…

fairgame84 · 26/09/2022 09:28

You won't make your money back when you resell it. The resale value of prams is crap.
It won't do anything different to a pram that's half the price.

Cosycover · 26/09/2022 09:29

Because you will switch it to a £200 Joie after a few months. So much easier than a big bulky pram.

Beamur · 26/09/2022 09:30

I was given a nice travel system. Barely used it. Had a cesarian and couldn't lift it into the car. Started using a sling instead and never went back! Got a maclaren fold up when baby old enough and barely used that either.
£1400 is a lot of money. Agree that it's a surprisingly hard purchase to get right.

Calphurnia88 · 26/09/2022 09:32

We bought a Silver Cross bundle in their Black Friday sale for £775, which included chassis, carrycot, pushchair, car seat, isofix base, rain cover, foot muff and changing bag with mat (the one we bought is linked below). So definitely worth holding out until then.

www.silvercrossbaby.com/prams-pushchairs/bundles/coast-bundles/coast-and-simplicity-plus-car-seat-with-isofix-base-bundle/

I will say though... DS hated the carrycot and only went in it about 10 times until we gave in and used the carrier. Thankfully he loves the pushchair and all the other stuff has been well used. But he's not the only baby I know who hated the carrycot (a lot of newborn babies don't like to be laid flat due to gas, reflux, etc), so worth bearing that in mind before spending lots of money.

Northbynorthbreast · 26/09/2022 09:32

But it secondhand and save the rest for great clothes and nice days out.

I mean it’s up to you but you’ll soon discover it was a big waste of money!

MrsTimRiggins · 26/09/2022 09:33

Because you can buy one second hand for a fraction of the price.
Because spending nearly £1,500 on something a baby will not even need in a couple of years (sooner, possibly!) is ridiculous
Because babies are both beautiful and also truly gross, they will throw up, spill milk/food, have nappy explosions etc etc on your pram, whether it costs £1500 or £150… but it’s easier to shrug off when it’s £150!

MrsTimRiggins · 26/09/2022 09:35

Fwiw I (my mum actually!) spent £200 on a silver cross pioneer set (some sort of special edition, I forget now!) which included the chassis, carry cot, pushchair, car seat (new, not that my giant child ever used it), rain cover, foot muff, changing bag and mat, little mirror for the back of the car and a sheepskin seat cover as well. Second hang but completely immaculate. Prams don’t hold their value!

Arthien · 26/09/2022 09:36

Because it looks almost identical to our Silver Cross wave, which has sturdy wheels and is great off-road, has the same leather handle and can be a double if you plan to have a second soon after. We paid £600 for a pristine ex-display model in John Lewis. Don't get the infant car seat in a bundle, they're usually rated terribly, do your research and buy it separately.

Saying that, I'm also planning to get a lightweight one for city use and travelling, so keep money aside with that in mind.
