Give me one for reason why I shouldn't buy a pram that costs more than our car?

PFB is due in spring next year.

Today DP and I ventured into John Lewis to have a look at the prams and kind of fell in love with the Silver Cross Dune Dream - price tag of £1,430.

Our car cost £1,200 2 years ago 🥴

I used to be absolutely obsessed with the stokke prams and thought I'd got over that, now I'm back in silly price land.

GAH, help me!!

Absolutely no reason at all.

I used a sling for baby as public transport was easier and had a car seat for her that small for cab rides, then I never once paid for a buggy, just got hand me downs which are plentiful.

Why waste money I say?

Arthien · 26/09/2022 09:39

Also, I'd you care about what other people think, I got compliments about my lovely pram almost every time I took my baby out in the carrycot bit of it. That's not why I wanted it, but it definitely has the luxury feel you're after.

Brunilde · 26/09/2022 09:40

I'm not against spending a lot on a pram, but it has to be because the pram will work perfectly for your circumstances. Not because of the brand or how it looks. We used ours for 2 kids. Never got a cheap stroller as they were harder to steer and push, not as good on walks and not as sturdy. So we have more than had our monies worth. So pleased with our choice as it worked so well for us.

Do a lot of research and think really hard about how you will use it. And buy the best you can afford that matches your requirements. As long as money isn't an issue. Obviously if you can't afford it budget accordingly.

SusiePevensie · 26/09/2022 09:41

Can you get it down the aisle of a cramped corner shop? Or of a bus? Can you push it with one hand without getting cramp? If not step away and get a bugaboo bee.

Calphurnia88 · 26/09/2022 09:43

I've just checked and that is the price for the travel system, including carrycot, pushchair and car seat, isn't it?

In that case I don't think it's too bad, although I would definitely wait until the Black Friday sales start and go for a bundle with the isofix base.

NoMoneyHun · 26/09/2022 09:44

Some horrible bugger will steal it :( you can't have nothing nice these days.... I mean it, especially in my area.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 26/09/2022 09:45

Our SC Pioneer was around £1,200 for the travel set and the wheels on it were shit. If you caught it wrong when going down a path, it felt like they were going to snap off and the wheels on your pram look much smaller than ours were. I would never spend that amount on a pram again, we got a 2nd hand Mamas and Papas ocarro for DD2 and it feels much sturdier than the SC did. Brand new, they're in a similar price bracket. Yes Silver Cross prams are gorgeous and have been going for years, but I don't think they are worth the money at all, mine weighed an absolute tonne aswell. There are much better prams you can get for the money

Nottodaty · 26/09/2022 09:51

Many years ago we brought a new expensive pram. Baby hated it & we hated it. She was a terrible sleeper & we would go for walks it was rubbish on the terrain! I had a C-section and it was heavy to lift & fold up - you can tell I hated it!

We got a second hand 3 wheeler one with proper wheels & a small Quinn’s (also second hand ) They perfect! Sometimes you don’t know how you will use it or what you need it for! But recommend by 2nd hand - cheaper and usually they being sold because the parents want another one so often in very very good condition!

ImAvingOops · 26/09/2022 09:51

Having had 4 children and about 20 prams (kept buying new ones because none were quite right) my advice is to get something which isn't too heavy and has really good, strong swivel wheels and a decent sized shopping basket.

With my first baby, I used the carry cot instead of a Moses basket - it lasted much longer. Also if your baby hates being flat, I put a rolled up baby sheet underneath the mattress to create a gentle slope. You do have to make sure you've left no gaps around the mattress though, for safety, but it did help.

Best pram I had for my last ex was a baby jogger city mini.

QuietYou · 26/09/2022 09:57

It's not a good pram. SIL had one and it's not great to push. She got a baby jogger after about 4 months.

RudsyFarmer · 26/09/2022 10:00

The baby phase is a short one. They will grind food into the upholstery. They will throw up on it, leak on it , honestly i fell slightly into this trap myself and it’s currently sitting in the garage collecting dust until I can be bothered to sell it. It’s a Stokke by the way.

Ny advice is buy something fancy second hand. You won’t regret it.

Ein · 26/09/2022 10:01

Because someone will steal it. Quite a few posh biggies have gone missing in my town. Mums are tired and distracted, we forget it isn’t a good idea to leave a £1000 item in the street while they pop inside a shop, come back and its gone, nothing you can do.

pantsofshame · 26/09/2022 10:01

I'm assuming (may be wrong) that if your car cost £1200 the price of the pram is not insignificant to you. In which case think what else you could do with that money that would be more useful or enjoyable to you.

  • I don't know anyone who bought a big expensive 'travel system' that used it for more than 6 months (when they swap it for something lighter weight). It will look and feel lovely for about 5 minutes then it will be scratched, covered in vomit etc.
  • There will be lots of places that you want to go that it will be too big for so you will end up leaving it outside places and carrying you LO (leaving it vulnerable to theft/being bashed about etc)
  • Baby may just not like it
  • You'll think you'll love it for ever and use it for subsequent children(if you are thinking of that) but there will inevitably be another, newer, nicer model and fashions for colours etc will have changed.
  • Instead you could buy a cheaper model/second hand pram and use the money saved to have a nice long weekend away with you OH and baby, or save it towards a nicer than usual holiday when they are old enough to understand, or buy yourself some nice clothes after baby is born, or put it in a savings account for when they are older and want expensive school trips (few days away with school in the UK is now about £400, over £1000 for an overseas trip)/music lesson/sports coaching etc
Fabuleuse · 26/09/2022 10:03

It looks a little bit like the Uppababy Cruz which we bought new and lasted for two children and is probably a bit cheaper. I never felt the need to buy anything else - it was practical and light enough with a massive basket. I'd prioritise researching the functionality over things like a leather trim. If I was getting a pram these days I wouldn't bother with a carrycot. I'd get one of those Cybex lie flat car seats, and a Baby jogger (I once looked admiringly at someone folding it up with total ease one handed).

alittleadvicepls · 26/09/2022 10:10

You could look for it secondhand! Or if you do buy it you’d get some money back on it from reselling.

Sorry I’m not helping. I wanted the icandy peach when my first was born 6 years ago. It was a lot of money back then but I don’t regret it one bit because I kept it all these years and now use it for my 8 months old.

Caspianberg · 26/09/2022 10:12

I think its worth spending a decent amount to get something you will use a lot. However that pram looks heavy, with tiny wheels for such a large pram. generally you get small wheels of a small travel pram

We have a mountain buggy - £600. Use daily still 2.5 years later. It pushes with one finger, through woods and snow, and comfy place to sleep. It had a carrycot for newborn mode.

We also have babyzen yoyo - its used for travel, days when we need car empty for shopping in city, etc. its really handy. But I wouldnt want as only day to day pram unless you live in the city. Its lightweight and nifty in shops, but feels heavier to push longer with sleeping toddler in than our large wheeled pram.

If i didnt live so off road, i would have got a bugaboo Cameleon/fox. You can get for around £600

www.johnlewis.com/cybex-balios-s-lux-pushchair-carrycot-with-aton-b2-car-seat-and-base-black/p241250670 - this on john lewis looks almost identical to the silver cross one, and includes car seat, for £680

WhatAmIDoingWrong123 · 26/09/2022 10:16

It’s a very normal looking pram to me sorry OP. It’s really all the stuff that comes with the bundle that makes a pram worth paying that much, ours came with near enough everything we’ve needed for travel! I’d be careful getting anything too light in colour or shiny on the frame as they get dirty and scratched easily. A lot of people switch to a buggy very early on as well, I haven’t, but most do.

BrilliantGreenFlamingo · 26/09/2022 10:21

Why don’t you buy a cheaper pram and put the money you would have spent into a savings account for your baby.

Duplocrocs · 26/09/2022 10:22

Don’t do it unless money is no object. Use the money for extra activities etc. take a look on the Octopus Club and at BuggyParkUk - they sell loads of really nice refurbished pushchairs

mondaytosunday · 26/09/2022 10:22

I googled it - the Silver Cross website starts 'if the city is your catwalk...'
That says it all - it's a show off pram. You can get just as good at half the price.

MelodyPondsMum · 26/09/2022 10:24

If you can afford it and you love it, buy it. It's a car for your baby.
I had one of the giant traditional Silver Cross prams. I loved it. Used it all the time and then sold it on afterwards.

GreenManalishi · 26/09/2022 10:26

Because no pram is a 'Dream". It's marketing gone mad.

All prams end up with a unidenfiable squeak, full of breadstick crumbs, banana smears and smelling mostly of dust wth a faint whiff vomit. There will come a day when you are flicking dog poo out of the tyres with a stick, and you'll find a mouldy apple core in the basket, no matter how much you paid for it.

You will look at that pram, and wish you had got a second hand one.

emeraldcity2000 · 26/09/2022 10:26

Because (like every other parent I know!) I now have 2 kids and am on my 6th pram / pushchair... however expensive it is, you'll end up hating it and trade it for a lightweight umbrella buggy as soon as you can!

Overthebow · 26/09/2022 10:26

Do you have the money to buy it comfortably OP? As in buy it outright not on credit, no debts, good amount of savings in the bank?

You can buy a decent pram for much less or second hand even. I'd personally spend a lot less and put the rest of the money in a savings account for DC.

cormorant5 · 26/09/2022 10:27

Turn the question on its head.
Why would you?
Baby won't check prices or specification.
