Silvercross Pioneer vs Bugaboo Cameleon

Hi all

We live in zone 2 London but go to the countryside a fair bit (family etc).
Trying to decide between these two prams.

Thoughts gratefully received on which to choose. Every time I think I've made up my mind the shop assistants end up pushing me in another direction. It's a minefield!

Thank you

I LOVE our silvercross and I am thankful every day that we bought it. It's very robust, nice to push, comfy for the little one and works on multiple terrains. I don't know anything about the other one but would buy this again any day. Highly recommended.

We had a pioneer and it held up very well. It was used daily for 5 years (across 2 DC) and still had life left in it so we were able to give it away after DC2. We walked with it every day across varied terrains (dog walking). Only downside is that even folded it takes up a lot of space so if you need a decent sized boot for it.

Hercwasonaroll · 09/07/2020 19:00

Have you looked at uppababy? More robust than silver cross. I have a pioneer and it's decent for town stuff but big when folded and crap in the countryside.

Alternatively get a out n about for countryside stuff and a more city friendly small pram.

glasshalfsomething · 09/07/2020 19:04

The pioneer looks beautiful and is hardy, but the fold is a pain and it takes up so much space. I also found it heavy compared to the BJ I traded it in for.

I love silver cross products. For me it was never a question, I always knew I'd get a silver cross pram.
I loved the pioneer, the only downside was it doesn't stand up when folded down. But we never had to fold it so was not an issue for us.
I loved and had all the matching accessories as well.

chunkyrun · 09/07/2020 19:10

I just don't think there's any comparison. Has to be a bugaboo

cookiemonster5 · 09/07/2020 19:19

Silver cross. Without a doubt. Nothing compares to it. Mine is over 3 years old and still like new. I'll be sad to see it go when I'm done with it.

footprintsintheslow · 09/07/2020 19:26

I would choose a Silvercross every time. I have a Pioneer. The shopping trolley is huge and as for off roading I even took it to a festival and she was a dream.

Hercwasonaroll · 09/07/2020 19:31

I have a pioneer and find off roading a bloody nightmare! What am I doing wrong?! The front wheels get stuck and bend back on EVERYTHING!

CuteOrangeElephant · 09/07/2020 19:34

I just sold my DDs Bugaboo Cameleon (because she'd grown out of it!) and I loved it. I live in the countryside and it was fine there. It's also brilliant in shops and narrow spaces.

We didn't want one that was over 10kg and the Cameleon hit that brief.

alwaystiredalwaysgrumpy · 09/07/2020 19:52

I have a silver cross and I hate it. It's enormous when folded and more importantly the sun shade is basically a waste of time. Doesn't shield baby in the sun when you are using the bassinet, and equally useless when using the seat bit. It annoys me so intensely. If I was doing baby's again I would get a bugaboo in an instant.

transformandriseup · 09/07/2020 20:14

We have the Pioneer and the large basket and the adjustable handle are the only things I really like about it.

It is really heavy, it's bulky when folded, it's a nightmare on uneven pavements/roads and it has almost no sun protection, no suspension and my baby had outgrown the foot muff by 9 months.

footprintsintheslow · 09/07/2020 20:26

My two and half year old still uses the foot muff. Maybe she's a shortie?!😬😂

transformandriseup · 09/07/2020 22:30

My DD is 15 months now and is in the 90's for height percentile so pretty tall.

We do still use the foot muff but just not attached all the way around.

DemDem94 · 26/07/2020 17:07

I have a bugaboo and I love it. Totally recommend it.

JanewaysBun · 27/07/2020 22:40

I've got a Cam and love it. So many great features, so light to push and really manoeuvres well. Works well on London transport.

I've got a friend with a silver cross and tries one in the shop and they're a bit meh and not that comfy imo

blowyernose · 27/07/2020 23:24

I have the silvercross pioneer a special edition version. I used it for DD1 and now for DD2 at present. It looks great and seems sturdy. The big basket it a plus as you'll find you will definitely need it. Here are some downs:
The basket is difficult to access when the carry cot is on it. Fine when you change to the pushchair.
When your baby grows into a toddler I found the apron/cosy toes very quickly became too small. Shoes we a no! Couldn't get the feet in with shoes on. I ended up shopping for a new apron/cosy toes and found it hard to find anything that would fit the pushchair. It cost over £100! I would say I got maybe 1.5 years out of the silvercross apron, maybe even less than that.
It's massive and it will take up your whole boot unless you have a really big car or an estate. It takes up all of my Tiguan.
It's not great on rough ground.
I took off all the covers to wash for DD2 to use. I was surprised at how cheap the base was on the carrycot given I bought the whole travel system and it cost a lot. Well over £1000.
Don't buy the standard silvercross car seat it puts the baby into the most uncomfortable position. DD1 cried until she got a new one. DD2 also looked uncomfortable and seems to push her chin into her chest which I worry restricts her breathing so I don't use it.

However I like the wheels, it's great to push around, it's cosy in there for the baby.
However if I had the option I'd go for a bugaboo because I hated the apron so much on the silvercross and all the bugaboo kids looked so snug in the bugaboo apron that would come right up to their neck. It stops pretty low on the silvercross and this is a big deal for meal living in Scotland with very long winters.

I've got a bugaboo cam 3. Absolutely love it - I've had a few prams and it's definitely the best one to manoeuvre. I bought mine second-hand from a website called Pramsy and it's great! Not sure I could justify paying full price, especially when they are always destined for knocks and scrapes after a few goes of getting it in and out the car with your hands full. I think they might also have a Pioneer on there at the moment as well www.pramsy.com
