Original baby jogger city mini double for 3 1/2 year old and newborn

Hi all!

We are expecting a new baby in November. We already have the original baby jogger double and had planned to use it for the new baby alongside our daughter who will be 3 & half by the time baby arrives. We have established that there isn’t a car seat available for this model which is a shame but the seat unit itself is suitable from birth.

The seat laid flat seems far too open and lacks any sort or support, I was wondering if anyone else has this model and if you have any recommendations? Is there a carrycot or newborn accessory I’ve missed?

I really don’t want to buy a new double as it seems wasteful and difficult to find one that will fit daughter in comfortably as she is so tall now. I have a sling and plan to use that as much as possible but would like somewhere safe and snug to be baby down if we are out for longer periods.

How often will your 3 and a half year old need to be in a pushchair?

Yes there's a carrycot, I assume you can use it on the double but it'll be a different adaptor for the middle slot as far as I can remember. I wasn't aware that you couldn't use car seat on the double though, but I seen to remember when I had carry cot on the single there were 2 sets of adaptors, one for the double.

She will be in it almost every day hence my reluctance to replace the one I know works for her.

I’ve searched my double and I can’t seem to find anywhere on the centre bar to put adapters. I think
This is because ours is the older one the gt version seems to have more options!

I have just discovered the hoods come off independently- I’m wondering now if that’s where adapters fit?! I can’t seem to find any straight forward answers it’s so frustrating.

If you Google it there are plenty pictured with a carry cot on a double, so must be possible! I can remember the middle adaptor being different so must fix on differently to the outer ones. Anyway, I did use it without the carry cot from about 3 months as it was a very hot summer and the carry cot didn't seem well ventilated. It was fine fully reclined but I wouldn't want to put a tiny newborn in without the carry cot.

Yes I definitely can’t see how a tiny newborn would be secure enough. I’ve just googled again and I think it is out in where the hoods entered I hadn’t considered this before, I thought mine must be different! I think try order some adapters and hope they fit. It would make life so much easier to keep what we have! Thank you for your help.

Their customer service is really good so worth contacting them direct. We bought a carrycot on eBay for our single version but didn’t have adaptors. I emailed baby jogger and they sold me a set for only £10 and I received them in the post within a few days

DS was a pushchair hater so we only used it rarely as a newborn, but we had a support cushion to reduce the size of the seat. Mine was. If by original bjcm, you mean the one from about 9 years ago, I believe there was a carrycot, but I put DS in a footmuff with no further protection for the first few months. He was fine (or maybe just didnt dislike the pram as much as his older brother, so I thought it was a win!)

I’ve taken the plunge! I’ve found a new one that says includes ‘double’ adapters and I’ve found an article that’s says not compatible pre 2011. I don’t think ours is quite that old so I’ve taken the risk. I’m thinking if the carry cot doesn’t fit I’ll use it as Moses basket type thing when I want a bath! The insert looks ideal duckchick that will be my plan b!

Less stressed at the thought of not having to pushchair shop at the moment!

Is this the old style carrycot?

Yes 9 years would be about right I think! We do have the footmuffs I’m just more concerned about the lack of head support and the straps. I feel like there should be more!? Fingers crossed I’ve found a carrycot now!

I used a soft insert from a different buggy. Cant remember which brand but it was a bit like the Phil and Ted's cocoon thing and it had hooks under that could clip to the existing straps. Was a bit "home made" but worked well for us. (9y ago). My son was fine on a sheepskin though on the buggy flat from about 3m so didn't need it for long.

Are you having to travel a long way to nursery or something like that? I only ask as I have a not quite 3.5 and he has been out of a pushchair since July. I’m the first to vote pushchair for convenience and use as long as you need, but I do think you won’t need it much for a 3.5, would hate for you to get something you then don’t use. We use a scooter everywhere now. When he was newborn, DC1 was 2.3 so we did still use a pushchair for both but not for long. Then DC1 was on a buggy board - would a board work for you? And / or DC1 in pushchair, newborn in sling (I did this a lot for nursery drop offs)

We have the double as we have twins. Have never used a carrycot (didn't with our eldest in the single either) and didn't have any problems with them going straight into the lie flat seats. We used the footmuffs from birth when needed.

OP my baby city jogger is from 2009 and I still have it. The single though. I also have the hard carrycot. If you do find out that it will fit your double, you are very welcome to it. You can fit the carrycot onto the actual frame rather than in the 'hole parts' for the hood etc.

There is a 3.5 year gap between my two and I didn't use a double. Dd1 if we went on a long walk or out all day, used the buggy when tired and I'd slip dd2 in a sling.

It is a brilliant pushchair and even when dd1 was 6-7 and having a moment, she could sit in it and be pushed around. Massive seat.

Did you strap them in JC? And no ‘floppy’ heads?

Play dough we used to have the Phil and teds cocoon I can see how that work! May be another option!

Popskipiekin she will definitely need the pushchair still and will be really cross if she’s not in it and I put the baby in ‘her’ spot haha! So whilst I do love the sling I want to have an easy option to quickly ‘plonk’ baby number 4 down whilst I deal with the others!

It is such an amazing pushchair and we have been through more than our fair share! That’s why I’m so eager to hang onto it!

I wish 3 year old not using the pushchair was an option but sadly that is not a possibility. She is entirely non verbal and has a range of complex physical needs. She’s started taking her first unaided steps over the last month and walks well with her walking frame but it’s veeeeeeery slow and for very short periods.

It took me ages to find a double that suited me so I didn't get the baby jogger until my youngest was nearly five months and thought it wasn't worth getting the carry cot.
I really missed not having one though, he felt very exposed, especially as the hoods are so high. I put him in one of these, which was ok he seemed supported but I'd have preferred a carry cot.

I’ve never seen one of those before I love it! I was worried about waking baby if moving out of car seat into carry cot and was trying to work out a ‘quick’ swaddle to help settle again, that could be just the thing x
