Help! Ocarro or Donkey?!

We need to buy a pram for our first DC and are very confused and pretty much just going round in circles so I'm really hoping that somebody on here can help.

We've narrowed it down to either the Bugaboo Donkey or Mamas and Papas Ocarro, but either is a compromise in some way and I'm not sure which comprises to make!

My initial thought was the donkey as we're planning on having more DC fairly close together (about 2 years apart probably) so we can convert it to a double rather than paying for a whole new pram, and having researched other doubles this seems to suit us best for that circumstance anyway. However, I'm now a little concerned that the baby might grow out of the carrycot before 6 months as we're expecting it to be quite tall (DH is 98th percentile for height) so the Ocarro has the upper hand there as the seat unit lies completely flat so is suitable from birth and tbh, I prefer the idea of a lie flat seat for naps even beyond the six months anyway. Except, if we have a second then we're going to have to compromise on that anyway in order to have a pram that can carry both of them.

The Ocarro is also easier to fold and put in the car as the seat unit doesn't have to be taken off first, although I think slightly harder to push off-road (which we will likely do quite often) and doesn't seem to have quite as many handy features as the Donkey (e.g. a stand to use the carrycot as a moses basket for occasional trips or to use the seat unit as a high chair when out and about or visiting people).

Sorry for the long post but please could I have your opinions? What would be important to you when choosing?

Sorry, nothing to add , but had to laugh as I mis-read the title and thought this was a baby names thread!Grin

Haha! Nope, no plans to name the baby Ocarro or Donkey although I dare say someone out there might!

Ok, thought I'd give my thoughts on the prams! .I have a 2 year gap and bought an easy to use and lightweight collapsible double buggy for the times I'd take both out together. That Donkey pram looks really bulky and hard to collapse and use. Also, very hard to guess ahead what you might need in a couple of years. My dc1 hated laying flat in pram. My dc2 walked at a young age.

So I'd probably go for the other pram. But its a long time since I've used a pram, so hopefully someone else will give their opinions too.

I have no direct experience of either (you can stop reading now Grin) BUT my DSis has two DC 17mos apart. She has a Phil and Ted tandem and a side by side umbrella stroller. Even though the side by side is narrow for that style and I didn't originally like the idea of one child being "under" the other, the tandem is much more practical. Whether it's on buses, in town, on narrow country lanes or village pavements, it's a pain in the arse using the side by side.

The donkey is a big unit and known for being heavy, it's a faff to fold, and it's bulky even when collapsed. I would only go for it if I was expecting twins and wanted to have both parent facing when tiny. Admittedly don't know too much about the Ocarro, but if your plan is to go again it's a lot of money to spend on a pram that might not suit your needs for very long.

Sounds like you've done a lot of research already, but in your shoes I'd look at the iCandy Orange (has an integrated buggy board as well) or Peach all-terrain. They can both convert to doubles and you might like some of the other features like the seat elevators which mean you can use the pram as a highchair when out and about.

Oh my god @raisinseverywhere I'm glad it wasn't just me Grin

FurbabyMama · 07/11/2019 00:17

Thanks for your opinions. I can see the advantage of a tandem but I'm still not keen on them tbh, always looks like one child is squashed in and can't see anything!

I know the iCandys are popular but having looked at them in several different shops I just don't think they're suited to us, but thanks for the suggestion.

I would get the Donkey, bugaboo are a dream to push .

Fwiw I have a small gap and a REALLY late walker. I got the Cameleon and mountain buggy duet (hoping to get rid of that when DS eventually walks). I couldn't get the Donkey as it wouldn't fit in our lift but of kt did I defo would have

FurbabyMama · 26/11/2019 16:33

@JanewaysBun Thanks, that's really helpful. Do you mind if I ask why you don't like the mountain buggy? I'd looked at that one too and preferred the donkey for a double, but keen to hear opinions from someone who has actually had one
