Looking for a solution - big kid pushchair

So. Travelling with 5yo later in the year for a family event overseas, which involves some very late night/very early morning flights with connections at large airports renowned for their long walks. In previous trips, we’ve dusted off the old pushchair so we could push him between gates (and let him sleep) until we get on the plane. We had a Silver Cross Pop which went up to 25kg and worked perfectly but he’s big for his age (in terms of height and weight he’s more like a 7-8 yr old) and so is now out of range for that pushchair (he’s about 27.5kg and 132cm) Anyone got any ideas of what might work? Or will I just be trailing and exhausted whingy five year old for miles on end...? Everything I’ve seen stops at either 15, 18 or 25kg...

I’m happy to buy new or second hand so long as it’ll work, so discontinued models perfectly acceptable too!

Have a look at the Phil and Ted's Dash. The seat back is one of the longest I've ever found.

BewareOfDragons · 28/04/2018 15:14

He's taller and heavier than my almost 9 year old (DD)! I can't see it working, myself, unless he has special needs. He's 5 and big for his age, so any pushchair his size will be expensive.

Other than letting him ride on a luggage cart, I think you may have to prepare him to walk. Unless you can carry one of those smaller fold up scooters with the plastic board and 3 wheels for him to use alongside you as you walk... wonder if that would be allowed.

What about one of these? Big wheeled scooter, completely folds down ... could stuff it in a backpack for the carry on at the gate?

jammiebammie · 28/04/2018 15:19

He’s heavier than my 9 year old too, she’s disabled and we either have to use a wheelchair or a special needs pushchair (we have mclaren major elite)
No other standard pushchair is big enough, prior to splashing out on the mclaren we had a Phil and teds but it just became too small.

If he is NT then I don’t think you need a pushchair. You can get suitcases which have fold down seats which may work to bridge the gap? Or as pp has suggested, get a small fold down scooter.
He may surprise you when you’re actually there, good luck with your travels.

Try looking at the Jane ones - not sure on weight but seats are huge

LumiereLennie · 28/04/2018 15:50

Thanks folks - yep, totally NT, just massive for his age and a boy who loves his sleep. If it was during the day, I wouldn’t even be considering it, but at soon as 7pm comes, all he wants to do is sleep. Will have a peek at the suggestions and hope for the best!

Before you spend your money, check that the airports don't have complimentary pushchairs onsite. We faffed around in Dubai with our buggy, only to find hundreds of the things available all over the place.

Have a lovely trip Smile

KerplunkChampion · 28/04/2018 16:10

Older model mountain buggies are brilliant for this. Have a good flight.

trilbydoll · 28/04/2018 16:14

Is there anything wrong with the Silver Cross? Our buggy has a weight limit of 25kg but I regularly put both dc in it (30kg+) and it hasn't collapsed yet. I'm sure it will one day, but I'd just risk it in your position.

flapjackfairy · 28/04/2018 16:17

A maclren major would work though they are not cheap. Maybe see if you could hire one or get one second hand

BalloonFlowers · 28/04/2018 16:27

I think I'd just use the pushchair you've got until it breaks.
Are you sure you would even get the pushchair back for the transfer?

LumiereLennie · 28/04/2018 17:03

The Silver across still wearing well, but given to a friend when her 2yo outgrew their travel system, sadly. Will have a further hunt!
