Recommendations for a travel system for a mom who uses public transport only

Hi, I am a mom to be and asking for your help to select the most suitable travel system( carrycot,push chair and car seat set) for my baby who is due in next March. I do not have a car and using buses and trains to all my travelling. So i think my baby's pram should be ok with rough usage.Especially the wheels should be strong enough as this will be my baby's main mode of transportation.
As the 1st time mom to be, i have no idea about good prams. Please help me. Thanks in advance

an ergo sling. no need for a car seat or buggy at all.

or a bugaboo bee if you really must.

Did you check Argos. There are plenty of options out there.

Do you really need a car seat or carrycot? If using buses and trains a lot I would get a narrow umbrella fold that can lie flat, eg Maclaren XT, with comfy insert, and have done with it. If you aren't using a car seat often you don't need to carry it around.

My XT did 5 miles most days for 5 years. If you routinely go off road you might want one with larger wheels but those are not good for buses. Other good similar models are now available. A sling is great if steps are unavoidable but buggy gives you somewhere to put down a sleeping baby and to put shopping.

We used the Baby Jogger City Mini on public transport for 2 kids and it was ideal.

You can if you want use a carrycot or car seat on top but tbh it just adds more bulk and hassle if you need to fold. It lays flat so is suitable for a newborn any way. I used it with a nice cosy, padded footmuff the Jane nest Plus is gorgeous!

It is compact but sturdy, the seat is huge, wheels are big enough to handle most terrain (although not great off road!) And it is a true one hand fold for when you need to hold baby and fold to get on/off buses.

Thanks for the suggestion. But i need a car seat to take the baby from the hospital to home by a taxi. so although I m not gonna use it after that, i must have it when discharging from hospital. isn't it?

It is not possible to carry the baby in a sling all the time.So it is easy if i have a carry cot/pram.

This do not need a car seat to take your baby home from hospital, though some units would have you think that. But your baby does need to be transported safely.

Do you have any friends you could borrow one from, just for that first journey home?

You fo need to think about width of the aisles on public transport, because it is a total PITA to struggle something that doesn't have good clearance, plus other passengers will (rightly) be pissed off if you collide with them (though most will swallow irritation).

I think the bigger MacLarens are still the best for this. All the range will fit down aisles, nod the sturdier models are lie back and usable from birth. They can be folded (useful when buses are rammed but you really need to get moving, not keep waiting for the next one).

And rethink the sling. I didn't get my first pushchair until my eldest was about 6months old. Small babies are very portable!

We don’t have a car.
Also used babyjogger city mini. I love it. It’s kept its value through one child, and now being used for the second. We were given a baby car seat that had been barely used (easy to get attachments for it for the pushchair) and if I were you, I’d buy a baby jogger carry cot online - they’re good for about 5 months.

I use the sling more often to be honest, but the pushchair is definitely useful.

Don't bother with a "travel system". Buy an infant car seat if you plan to take taxis occasionally but there's no need to buy one specially to leave the hospital. Use a sling primarily (I didn't use a buggy at all in the first 4 months). I favour the Babyzen Yoyo as a very light buggy with a very narrow wheelbase perfect for public transport, but a Maclaren umbrella fold is also a great bet.

Do you do a lot of walking generally? We don't drive and we got a Quinny Buzz which was great for us. We do lots of walking, both to get where we need to be and for fun along very uneven paths/canals etc.
Pros- very easy to push, wheels can cope with very rough terrain, wheels can be removed, pumped up and replaced- we got through several as we walked so much, a buggy with fixed wheels wouldn't have lasted us.
Cons- It's heavy and takes up space when collapsed - I wouldn't recommend it if you were having to lift it in and out or a car. Three wheeler so not a huge basket. No parent facing function on the push chair (not a problem for us but would be for others)

I just wheel the buggy on to the bus or train. Are you planning more dc? We got a Phil and Teds when we had dd and have loved that too. The Quinny was bought from a friend for £150 and passed on to women's refuge in very good nick 2 years later. We have always juSt had very basic car seats as they get used so infrequently.

I have Mothercare Journey (4 wheels). I don't drive and so take it on the bus all the time. Have also been on lots of trains (regular and Tube). It works great for me. I find it quite light and compact, without compromising storage space.
