Buggy boards: what age to start using?

DS2 is due around DS1's second birthday. I don't drive and have a big old fashioned pram so will mostly use a pram top toddler seat for him while the baby is in the pram but at the weekend DH will drive and we'll use the travel system (chassis with the carrycot or car seat) as it's easier to fit in the car boot.

Our travel sytem can convert to a double but DS1 has always disliked being tilted even slightly backwards and at 20 months has only just accepted that travelling in the pushchair seat in its most upright position is ok. He still really hates the tilted back position he'd have to sit in if it was used as a double, so I wondered about getting a buggy board. I've only seen older children on them though, so thought I'd ask what age other toddlers managed to use a buggy board safely for occasional short journeys.

DS is on the slower side of picking up language, so isn't good with instructions like "hold on here" yet but has quite good self-awareness of keeping himself safe, so does hold on nicely if he uses a normal swing instead of a baby swing at the park, for example.

My cousin started using one with her DS when he was 2 years and 3 months when his baby sibling came along - he has grasped it very well and really enjoys it.

Thanks, moo, that's helpful to know.

I can't really help with the age thing but I did see on Jojo maman bebe you can buy a buggy board seat so they can sit down if they don't want to stand which sounds great to me!

Oh yes, I did see that but I wondered whether he might be a bit too far away to hold on to the pushchair/pram handle if he was sitting rather than standing. I think I need to find a shop with a demo one and try this really but I'm not sure if there are any.
