18month old & newborn

Hi. Baby no 2 is on the way & no 1 will be 18months so still in need of a pushchair. We have a bugaboo cameleon and a flick and go maclaren so are fine for single ones! No 1 will only be in a pushchair for another 18months then it will be back to a single one.... Do we invest in an all singing and dancing double travel system (can use car seat) or a double like the out n about which long term will be more beneficial. How easy will it be to not use the car seat for the new baby and just transfer her/him into a pushchair. What a dilemma!! Can anyone please give me some feedback/advice if you have been in this situation too! Thanks. :)

I have 20 mo between my DC. I think you need to think about how you will use your double if you see what I mean.

I walk everywhere so I have the double nipper 360. It's amazing and fits in all shops and doorways and handles beautifully. We live in the city centre. It also goes in a bus in an emergency.

I also use an Ergo for my son now my daughter can walk more confidently.

Equally I sometimes use the single pushchair!

I guess what I'm trying to say is if you are planning on driving a lot (and assuming your 18mo is walking) you may be ok with the car seat clipped onto your bugaboo for a while. I actually didn't buy my double until my son was 4mo and we were settled on a routine.

I've got a slightly smaller age gap - 17mo between them, and I've got an oyster Max. we rarely use the car seat on it because I don't think they are very good for babies to be in, so almost always put the carry cot on. but its a fab pushchair - light, easy to push and a comfy seat for everyone.
con's are that dd1 always drops her shoes on dd2s head, and I've broken the basket from not taking care.
its a pain to put it all together getting put the car too.

but I also have a double McLaren and it takes me as long to put up put of the car as its heavy and you have to wiggle it to get it up and its stiff to recline the seat for the newborn. it just makes me think the oyster is more fab!

it also goes to a single so we sold our single oyster, but tbh I'd use the single maclaren if I only need one in - which is so far never!

I think fundamentally you will naturally lean towards either a tandem or a side by side. Its perfectly possible to get a side by side which takes a car seat eg the TFK Twinner Twist Duo or the Stroll Air My Duo. There are plenty of options. Whatever, treat a double like a rental. There may be one double which lasts, but equally you may prefer one which takes a car seat to start with but as your children get bigger, you may prefer to swap. Look critically at your lifestyle and decide what is most important to you. If you are in and out of the car all the time for example, which would you prefer a large one piece pushchair (if it fits in your car) or one with parts to assemble (and if so how many parts are there). Do you walk a lot? Do you go off road? How important is parent facing? Do you shop or need basket space? If you prefer a tandem, where will the baby go at each age stage eg newborn, 6 months, 12 months? Who will need a reclining seat - both or just the baby?
With an 18 month gap you are almost certain to need a double, so have a look now :)

I totally agree with Tiggywinkle. As she says, get in a shop and try them out. They all look quite similar online but when you get a physical feel for them you'll start to know what you want.

Make sure you try them through a standard door and practise folding them alone. Some of them are so heavy! Good luck
