Carrycot as 'the' cot for first months?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is it ok to use the carrycot that comes with some travel systems as the only cot for the first few months?

And if so, can you just put it on a sturdy chest or similar, or does it need a proper stand? And what brand is best? Am on a tight budget, but would rather buy to last than buy twice.

Thank you!

We're going to use the carry cot that came with our pram and just buy a stand for it, I think you can get them from about £40ish, or so says DH. It's what my parents did with me and I turn out alright Grin

I put mine on the floor

If you plan to use a carrycot for overnight sleeping, then you need to ensure it is a carrycot which has passed safety approval for overnight sleeping e.g. the Uppababy Vista, the iCandy Peach etc. You then need to read what the manufacturer suggests. I know Uppababy do a stand, but iCandy recommend the carrycot is placed on a firm surface eg the floor (or I guess the pushchair chassis). So do your homework!
