Phil and Teds Explorer for a newborn

My partner and I are looking at getting the explorer. I am just curious if anyone has used it for a newborn without the cocoon or bassinet? Opinions on any of the three options welcome.

Are you just going to lie the baby on the main seat (underneath the doubles kit on top) snuggled in with blankets?

My understanding is that the main seat lies out completely flat. It will be just the one so won't have a double kit on top. So yes, I would have thought main seat folded flat with blankets was fine. My partner believes that the bassinet is a necessity but I'm having difficulty following her logic when the primary use would be for it to be clipped into the pram and hence having the same function as the main seat folded flat.

So if the main reason for getting the bassinet is to use it as part of the pram, how is it better/safer/more supportive for the baby than using the main seat folded flat?

Am I being unreasonable wanting an explanation as to why she believes a bassinet is essential?

This will be our first and the explorer was recommended by a friend.
