Bugaboo Gecko

I can't get on with just my maclaren quest as my everyday pram. I need to go back to something bigger as I walk miles everyday. My DD was far happier parent facing and I need a more accessible basket and big back wheels as pavements round here are awful. So looking for something cheapish on eBay. A few Gecko's have sold reasonably priced near me and it fits all my needs. I've no experience with bugaboo but they seem popular. Just wondered what opinions people had or suggestions for alternative options? Can't spend too much-maximum probably £100! Thanks.

I loved my Gecko. It was extremely light to push and the suspension was very good. It's also lovely and narrow and could turn with one finger. The only downsides were that the handle is a bit low so I wouldn't get one if you're tall, and the recline function is under the seat. That didn't bother me too much but if you had a bad back then you wouldn't want to keep poppong up and down if your child wants to change position quite often. The Bugaboo Frog is similar but has a bumper bar, recline buttons on the side of the seat and the hood is lined with quilted material. They can also be found cheap as they're older than Geckos.

My friend has one and it's lovely but she says two piece fold which is a pain and bulky for a boot..

cupofteaplease · 30/07/2012 21:56

Loved our Gecko, it was a great investment Smile

I loved my Gecko, they seem to go so cheap for what they are. Especially if you get a good example. Great to push over rubbish pavements, perfect for them infact. Only issue I had with mine was fixed harness height and too much baby escaping Grin

Mamamaiasaura · 30/07/2012 23:06

Still using my gecko, now on our 9 month dd. love it :)

HypatiaTheProcrastinator · 30/07/2012 23:19

I used a liner or footmuff with multiple strap holes to pull the harness height down. I'd forgotten about that!

Thanks everyone! Stupid question but does the seat unit on the gecko sit away from the frame? In pictures it looks like the connectors are tilted forward in forward facing mode and the seat looks as if it's hanging off the frame! The frog doesn't seem to look like that, nor the cam? I think a gecko is the way to go though!

Don't know what you mean Confused.

dozensofpichu · 31/07/2012 15:31

It's hard to explain sorry! Basically on the Gecko's I'm looking at on eBay the chassis has the seat unit on, not the carrycot. In the forward facing mode the seat is on the chassis but the angle it's fixed on at makes the seat look like it's tilted away from the chassis, sort of hanging forward over the front wheels. I can't link as I'm on my phone and it's hard to explain Confused

Ok the seat unit and carrycot fit on the same frame. So you removed the carrycot frame and replace with pushchair cover. It has 3 positions, upright (for when they are 1yr plus, titled at around 45' which is our fav, or flat (like carrycot position). You can easily lift seat/cot part out so baby can face ether way. Flip handle for off roaring. It's great. Good on beach and snow too.

Mamamaiasaura · 31/07/2012 15:37

Sorry I meant you remove the fabric carrycot cover and then put the fabric pushchair cover on same frame.

dozensofpichu · 31/07/2012 16:45

Ah now I didn't know about the flip handle for off roading! That's very helpful thanks mamamaiasaura! And it would be great for the beach too. Think I better spend some time tonight seeing what I can find on eBay!

See if their demo video is on YouTube

Ihateparties · 31/07/2012 20:07

I know what you mean! The seat does look further forward than on the other two but it's not a problem, well I never found it too be such. I had a gecko at the same time my friend had a cam and both were new, I was glad I had not paid the extra. I still think it's a great cheap second hand buy, as is a frog but a frog would likely be older.

dozensofpichu · 31/07/2012 20:57

ihateparties yes, that's what I mean about the seat! I don't think it's going to be a problem though. I've just spent an hour looking on eBay-there's none nearby and seemingly people don't like to post!
Also, If I buy one in black will a cam seat liner fit? I like the bright colours. Also is the hood interchangeable with a cam one? Thanks

Have you tried gum tree? I went for black and it means I could accessorise for boy or girl (ended up with sheepskin liner). I managed to pick up spare green seat cover for 99p plus p&p from eBay. The material on the coloured one is no way near as good/sturdy as my ball.

Oh and it's all machine washable Smile

dozensofpichu · 31/07/2012 21:06

I will try gum tree then. Interesting that the black seat fabric is harder wearing-think that might be the way to go. There are lots of nice seat liners and bits on eBay, and can buy a colourful footmuff for winter!

Ihateparties · 01/08/2012 19:29

No I'm pretty sure the hood isn't interchangable cos the cam one is slightly bigger. I heard of people doing it and it being baggy. etc I was tempted to try but I can't exactly recall now why! Ditto the Cam fabrics don't go on either but the bugaboo liners I though were universal, or at least they do a universal one.

dozensofpichu · 01/08/2012 21:18

Thanks for your help! have found a frog locally so may go with that over the gecko-I wish I could find a comparison chart or something as I can't work out the differences between the 3 and what is interchangeable with which ones IYSWIM! Bugaboo website not massively helpful!

The Cam carrycot apron fits on the Gecko but the hoods don't. You can get around that by buying Cam hood rods and clamps and attaching them to your Gecko so Cam hoods will fit. I had a green Gecko and the fabrics were in excellent condition after 6 years of use. The liners will fit on the Gecko I think but I used Mamas and Papas universal ones on mine which fitted perfectly.
