Help! Need a buggy for a large 3 year old!

My youngest is just 3 and struggles to walk the school then pre-school run twice a day. I have a lightweight stroller that Im using, but it is not coping -it keeps collapsing! He is a big (and heavy!) boy and so I need something that is a. a bit more comfortable for him, b. more sturdy and c. as easy to push as poss. So not asking much really! A friend lent me an old mamas and papas but he is just too big for it...any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

get a second hand Maclaren xlr as its pretty large, but its expensive for a stroller if you buy new (£285.00).

a 3 wheeler is probably your best bet, what's your budget?

Budget is as little as poss tbh!

See what 3 wheelers are on ebay near you and I'll tell you if they are big enough! YOu will be better off with a swivel wheel one.

i have a baby jogger city micro and really love it.
the seat is very "tall" and takes my 3 yr old comfortably.

I have a big 2yr old and the seat on the XLR is too small, just fits into baby jogger city mini however.

my large 3 yo is fine in my maclaren techno xt, but a little squashed in the quest, she generally fits quite comfortably in 3 wheelers

buy him a scooter instead- nice and quick- no hassle

Good point, my youngest was on her mini micro scooter from her 3rd birthday....she used to do 4-6 miles per day!

Go for a second hand Jane salom three wheeler massive seat, managed to fit my (admittedly small) 3yr old and her 16 mth old sister on it a few weeks ago. Although I would say it's probably not going to have much of a shalf life and a scooter or a balance bike (very popular for younger sibling around here!) would be a better investment.

why should he be walking? is there a rule? god, someone should tell my 3 year old that when he is desperately tired after nursery and doesn't want to walk all the way home.
i guess i ought to drag him, crying, along the ground rather than just let him have a rest

otherwise who knows what will happen... clearly he'll grow up to be pushchair dependent

3 wheeler should be fine. My 4yo fits in the mothercare urban detour and the back seat of the Phil & Teds.

Granted the journey AFTER nursery he may be knackered but FFS a three year old should be walking most of the time by now!

I don't think OP has said that she will use the buggy all the time, has she? Or indeed asked for our comments on the appropriateness of her buggy use?

Sorry, but I do get fed up with how people get jumped on with this issue. It depends on so many factors: length of walk, strength of child, amount of shopping to carry, availability of alternatives (car, bus...).

DS is 3.5 and very very tall.

It works well because the end of the seat "flips up" to create a very long seat. You can just about see the catches on the picture. This means DS's long legs don't drag on the floor!

It is very lightweight, good for getting on/off public transport, folds up small and DS says it is comfy because his feet don't drag on the floor like they did in the MacLaren.

On the -ve side it is fine in a straight line but not so easy to manoevre round corners!

well rioja... point me to where anyone on this thread has said their 3 year old only ever goes in a buggy...

no-one has. you have NO idea how long the OP's journey takes or how far it is.

and you know what, afaik, there is no rule about how old your child has to be when they stop using a buggy. some of us also have kids who run off, who are safer in a pushchair, esp if you have other children to look after.

and lastly... does it matter? really? does it? does it worry you so much that someone might do something differently from you?

M&P Ziko is very good, steers extremely well and tends to be cheaper on ebay than maclarens don't see the appeal with Mc's, they're rubbish combared to my ziko IMO :) )

DS is 3.5 and very tall and we use a Quinny Zapp.

We had a landrover pushchair. Fantastic, fantastic! Had the same problem as you, as ds was too big for most by the age of 3.Also used to get same comments about him being in it. But as he probably walked a long way every day and was never ferried about by car, I never took any notice!At 6 he could still fit in it, not that he used it at all!
You can still get them on ebay.
Just like the landrover adverts, they will easily cope with any terrain.

My micralite fastfold was great for my big lump of a lad, he was in it the odd occasion while 4.
The seat is quite high so no dragging legs and is kind of like a hammock,no rigid sides so not squashed into it.

I throughly second kahlua. Ive bought a second-hand landrover 3wheeler for DS1 and it is still going strong for DS2. My friend has one still going strong after DC5.

DS1 could still fit into comfortably at five.
Its light enough to hoik over 5bar gates (yes I do that almost daily!),Ive taken it all over the world and its tough enough for all sorts of abuse.

They aren't produced anymore however, so you would be best off looking in local papers or ebay.
