are bed valances utterly naff?

We've got a single bed in our spare room that converts to a double bed, but it looks a bit ugly underneath because you can see the feet of the other bed when it's a single. I want to buy a bed valance that's a bit more substantial than those ones that are made of sheet material iyswim.... any recommendations?

No, they are not naff. Can't recommend any - I would just buy a normal one in John Lewis or such like.

No not naff at all. Mind you I don't like the ones with gathers all round the edges, much prefer the straighter lines of the box edged ones.

You won't be able to use a normal valance on your bed, you'll have to get one which has openings at the bottom two corners so it sits over the bed, presuming the top bed has a head and footboard. Also, measure the drop from the base of your bed as you don't want to end up with one that's too short or too long. Apparently Ebay is a good place for finding them.

thanks maggie... I don't have headboard or footboard yet, it's more like a divan type with the extra bit underneath instead of drawers. I will need one a bit longer because of the height of the top mattress.... I was hoping to buy one off the shelf because all the ones I've seen where you have them made to order are over £100

No, not naff and eternally preferable to looking at an ugly bed underside (if you have a beautiful bed, don't bother). White Company do some nice boxed shape ones rather than frilliness which is seldom a good look.

Fizzylemonade · 26/02/2010 12:39

Headfairy, I have a single divan with a pull out underneath, I actually have it so that the pull out bit is against the wall. Therefore you see what looks to be a non-storage divan.

I use a divan valance so it sits under the mattress and then use a separate sheet for covering the mattress. Mine was from Next but you are right the fabric is thin, and it is the reason I chose white divan beds! Mine are box pleat valance, I don't do frilly

heasfairy we have a v similar bed but I had trouble finding a valance as when put away it's only 2'6" ie smaller than a normal single

got a box pleat one from here in the end

HeadFairy · 26/02/2010 17:40

MrsB, our bed is actually a 3' bed when it's a single, I don't know if that's the size of a normal single (the second bed bit is 2'6")

I will check out Next and White company Horsewoman and Fizzy... thanks !
