They want an extra 77K on top of the 100K cheque the owners have already given him?? He does this every week. It's

I would love a library. Grand Designs had a great library one time, even Kevin covetted it.

My father has a beautiful library, collects books, but hasn't really had time to read in last 30 years.
Still a beautiful thing to have.

Katz · 31/07/2009 15:08

i'd love a library

LIZS · 31/07/2009 15:11

@ library

noddyholder · 31/07/2009 15:11

ooh a library!i have shelves built into nooks and crannies for books All clutter behind doors!I hate too much 'stuff'.i did do the navy and grey room its lovely but has no curtains yet and no storage so no one has used it!

SausageRocket · 31/07/2009 15:13

The only rooms in my house with books on 'display' are the kitchen (cook books) and DD's bedroom

jeanjeannie · 31/07/2009 15:32

@ Grendel's library.

GrendelsMum · 31/07/2009 15:36

It's a very dinky library, but it's still lovely. But it doesn't stop me doing monthly runs to the Oxfam bookshop with the overflow!

HerHonesty · 31/07/2009 15:52

would love love love love love a library, grendel i am very very very envious.

dh and i would have very heated discussions every 6 months or so about books to keep/chuck (scientist married to politician..) particularly about which ones are in the living room...

but we have a pantry which quite honestly he couldnt be less interested in. i even said i was going to paint it pink and cover the shelves in cath kidston oilcloth and he didnt bat an eye lid. for any other room this would have induced heart attack. we thought about making that into a mini library but i am glad that it is "my space"

Terpsichore · 31/07/2009 16:04

I once knew someone who lived in an unbelievably gorgeous Arts & Crafts house in a very desirable area of London. He had a huge wood-panelled library. It was swoonsome.

Am still aspiring to that sort of thing, one day......

HerHonesty · 31/07/2009 16:18

sorry meant to write dh and i have (not would have).. clearly need to read/write more.

Tinker · 31/07/2009 16:43

Hope he ripped out the wood panelling and painted the woodwork white, terps?

chocolaterabbit · 31/07/2009 16:58

I would love a library although its not only a dream, its rapidly becoming a necessity (also eyeing double stacked bookcases). I grew up in Oxford and quite a few of my friends had furniture made entirely out of books - coffee tables made of books with a bigger book on top. That was perhaps going a bit far.

Back to the subject of the thread - I hate this programme. He is so expensive and most of it is redecoration/ furniture which the family don't get to choose. IMO, there should be an introduction with a brief and a budget and then several architects should come up with designs for the work, family choose the one they like, C4 shows a bit of building work and finished product.

Actually, the thing that bugs me the most is George's whole 'will I have enough money to do what I want' at which point I scream 'it isn't your house so live with it' and DH turns the TV off...

GrendelsMum · 31/07/2009 17:25

HerHonesty - if you don't tell him that you're doing a book run, he won't know until he is browsing on the Church Fete bookstall...

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 31/07/2009 17:26

The temptation to cut and copy this thread, then send it to channel 4 is very strong, especially as the family had a sick child. I do think they were ripped off, for them to hand over 100K must have been terrible for them, then he requests another 77K!! I really can't see what they have to show for 177K. You can buy a three bed house where I live for that. I feel like they were very badly advised.

Library!!! I'd just like a bigger house.

TheCrackFox · 31/07/2009 17:43

I honestly have no idea why people would take part in this programme. I wouldn't trust someone to choose a cushion for me, let alone an entire house.

Am I the only one that thinks "open plan living" would be a fucking nightmare with DCs? You could never escape from their mess and noise.

LIZS · 31/07/2009 17:45

I suppose if they hadn't insisted on a dedicated 5th bedroom they could have had an adult bolt hole

HerHonesty · 31/07/2009 18:15

ha ha ha good point. we had a very long discussion once on whether he wanted people to know he was a science fiction junky. he missed the point that i was whether or not I wanted people to know I was married to one...

thecrackfox i like the idea of open plan (and we are going that way) because i hate being cut off from them in the kitchen where i seem to spend half my life.. but we do have a seperate sitting room so have some adult space..

brimfull · 31/07/2009 19:58

crackfox-you are so right about open plan

we extended about 5 yrs ago and are all open plan

tis shit with kids ,especially as we have one teen and one 6 yr old

wish we had two reception rooms

tis great for partise etc though

but I still want to shout at the telly when they say it's fab for families -that is bollocks

goldenpeach · 31/07/2009 20:04

Having worked in the media, albeit magazines, I'm wondering if it's doctored for drama. Although the money pit dramas that are generated don't do anything for his reputation as architects are supposed to know about contingency money. The latest hilarious thing in the media world is that Phil Spencer whose company is doing really badly is writing a book about property!!!!

I prefer the Home for Life show on BBC2 where people choose the fittings and the money spent is much lower...

George fancies himself too much and his best friend is a sledgehammer

HerHonesty · 01/08/2009 08:17

ggirl, am concerned to read your post. are you completely open, do you have any other seperate living space?

brimfull · 01/08/2009 13:35

herhonest-downstairs is completely open except for utility and toilet.

There are problems when you want to shut the dog in a room then remember you haven't got any doors left -this was a problem when our old dog ws shitting everywhere but she's dead now

Noise is a problem,I like listening to music in the kitchen but it fights with the tv.

DD is 17 and i think another reception room would be great for her and her friends. They do use her bedroom but that's a pain if ds is asleep.

Anyhoo it looks great and most of the time it works but if I was doing it again I would keep the living room area seperate. The best bit of it is the open kitchen seating area so socialising there si easy when cooking etc.We use that bit the most.

brimfull · 01/08/2009 13:36

have read now that you have sep living room ,so lucky.Def keep it that way.

noddyholder · 01/08/2009 14:22

We have open plan kitchen diner tv room hall all in one.Seperate loo/utility and retained a room at the front as a grown up family room.We only have one ds he is 15 and has a lot of freinds over which is when the seperate room is a godsend. Also when the dishwasher and extractor are going its noisy. But is great in the daytime when there are lots of people in the house and garden and you are never 'alone'!Plus it looks amazing

msled · 01/08/2009 17:49

noddyholder · 01/08/2009 19:11
