Where to buy nice (or even just OK) free-standing wardrobes?

Must come flat-packed because of our stairs (no way we could get fully assembled ones up them).

Is there any alternative to IKEA?

Should have added, I don't want pine style wardrobes. I'm endeavouring to transform our hideous 1970s bedroom into a fabulous boutique hotel style oasis of tranquility (pardon the cliches )

How about Dwell? Some of them say 'some assembly required', so presumably come at least partially flatpacked. You'd need to check with them before ordering though, I guess.

Not sure about Dwell. I think they're ok. Dh says they look dull and depressing.

Have just ruled out M&S - they're all too big or small.

I know you said not Ikea, but I really like the Hemnes wardrobe www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70141855, it seems much sturdier and better quality than the Pax ones we had before. Sorry if this is just annoying as I appreciate you did say not Ikea!

JL not suitable - all options ready assembled or dated in style or the wrong width.

Like the Heals ones. Cap style would be perfect but very £££ and we'd need 2 of them and a chest of drawers . Like the Westbury one too, but it isn't wide enough.

Local junk or charity shop? Auction room? You can get good quality stuff at reasonable prices, the only problem is that you might need to do them up. Sometime, it's the only way to get non standard sizes. For instance I was looking for a chest of drawers to fill a space and nothing was sold in that size. I bought an ugly 80s one from charity shop and just by painting and then distressing it, it looked great! If the wood is good quality, though, all you need to so is strip it and repaint/varnish it. I love tarting up furniture!

goldenpeach - lovely idea but I don't have the time (or enthusiasm) to find such things or do them up. Bedroom itself is being decorated in slow motion as and when I get a rare child-free hour.

They made them for us in the bedroom.Fab quality but pricey.

His stuff looks great but you're too far away, I'm afraid.

I have had someone like bettyjacks dh do built in storage for us.It is not nearly as expensive as you think and the finish and fit are brilliant compared to diy rubbish.They utilise every bit of space and fill all the awkward gaps etc and once painted the effect is seamless.

cotswold co / lombok (pricey), some of the furniture places on Wandsworth bridge rd now do painted furniture as opposed to ubiquitous pine. New heights. or how about getting a cheap but practical Ikea shell and get carpenter to hand make your dream doors?

think next would be better quality than argos?? the diy stores b&q/homebase, (never looked at their bedroom furniture). habitat?

I just got these doors from IKEA - they are new this month.

Photo is fairly crap, but they do look boutique-y and hulsta-esque irl.
