We're on south coast at the mo

Is it nice/friendly etc?

Any thoughts/advice gratefully received!

Why frome?

It's got crap transport links and is a long way from the coast and not a lot going for it imo

that's not really helping you is it...

PMSLBrokeMN · 04/06/2009 12:26

I know someone in Frome! It has a nice cheese shop. And the lovely Kevin McCloud lives there. Apart from that, it's a fairly standard rural town, lovely for the grownups, not so much fun for older kids.

morningpaper · 04/06/2009 12:29

unless they REALLY like cheese

littlerach · 04/06/2009 12:30

It is a nice town I htink.
Thpough I have no idea about schools.
WE went last year to the eco festival, and it has quite a bit of alternative stuff going on.

However, don't think I'd move there fron the coast though

traceybath · 04/06/2009 12:34

Its reasonably priced and umm not too far from bath she says helpfully.

I see Kevins already been mentioned.

Not too far from Babington House if thats your cup of tea.

cherrysunday · 04/06/2009 13:14

Thanks for the replies

My sister in law says it's up and coming?!

We're thinking of moving there because for the price of our flat we can get a 4 bedroom house with big garden!

Should we be looking at some villages instead do you think?

Its ok. quite pretty, prob is up and coming. quite arty. def has a chav side too.
its about half an hour from bath on plus side.

i prob would rather live in one of the villages on the bath side eg norton st philip so you can get into bath quickly.

depends what type of person you are though- are you moving from a a city? if so it will come as a real shock.

Rent first - thankfully we have when moving from city to somerset and don't really like it so not tied in.

bohemianbint · 04/06/2009 13:24

My mother used to live in Nunney not far from Frome, that was pretty idyllic...

BexieID · 04/06/2009 13:30

Isn't Frome where Jenson Button is from? Or is there another Frome? Have to mention JB, seeing as he is currently leading the F1 world championship!

Malkuth · 04/06/2009 13:33

Frome has been "up-and-coming" for the last 20 years. Because of the crap transport links it never actually "arrives"! It's ok-some lovely old houses but also some dodgy bits. It's a transition town so great if you are into environmental/ecological issues. We looked there but it limited where we could work so ended up off the A37 near Temple Cloud which is half an hour from Frome, Bath, Bristol, Wells etc.

morningpaper · 04/06/2009 13:35

I don't think any area with poor transport links is really going to change a great deal.

I would also agree with the renting - it will enable you to discover which areas are good or best avoided.

I feel a bit sorry for teenagers in these sorts of towns to be honest.

I suspect your in-laws have an ulterior motive!

OrmIrian · 04/06/2009 13:39

Frome is a bit so so IMO. But I suspect that once you live somewhere like that you find out the good points and make the most of what is there. Let's face it I moved to Bridgwater and am doing fine

OrmIrian · 04/06/2009 13:40

Tis very pretty area though.

Rhubarb · 04/06/2009 13:42

We viewed a house in Frome when we were looking around this area. We didn't like it.

As others have said, it's not really on the way to anywhere. You wouldn't be there unless you lived there.

If you have time on Saturday, there's a music festival in Holt - a very pretty village on the way to Bradford on Avon. Should be good, I'll be there!

Rhubarb · 04/06/2009 13:44

I'd say Chippenham was better for transport. It's near the Motorway, has a brilliant train service to Paddington, adequate town centre with loads of buses too and is quite pretty.

That's where we would like to move to.

Warminster is not too far from Frome and house prices there aren't too bad.

cherrysunday · 04/06/2009 13:45

OK starting to feel slightly sick now!

Thanks for responses so far.

I feel like we're the most disorganised movers in England...we're meant to be completing on 2nd July!

We do live in a city but I have felt like I'd like a change.

Mil and sil (who is lovely) live in Nunney so don't want to be too close!

Where do you/DH work?

What hobbies do you have?

GeneHunt · 04/06/2009 13:47

I grew up in Frome and for my entire childhood it was cheerfully refered to on the News as an 'Unemployment Blackspot'.

I loved it and I still like to visit now. I love the older properties in that lovely buttery coloured stone. I adore Victoria Park, thought Oakfield school was the best school ever and survived Frome College.

I see lots of arty folk when ever I visit and there are some fab boutique/bespoke type shops. I even love the library. I'd move there like a shot and I live by the coast too.

I know that the poster formerly known as Cod rates Frome very highly too. ;)

luvaduck · 04/06/2009 13:50

rent rent rent first. seriously. give it a go and see what you think. but if you buy you'll be stuck. you'll also be in a great position to offer on houses if you do like it as you'll be chain free.

GeneHunt · 04/06/2009 13:51

MP, Frome was wonderful as a teen.

Eleventy million pubs that serve under aged kids, a fairly priced supply of recreational drugs and just a bus-ride from Bath where you can purchase all your Gothic paraphernalia.

What more could you want?

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/06/2009 13:51

Don't move to Midsomer Norton. It may sound lovely, but it's a shithole.

(with apologies to any MNetters who may live there!)

PILs live there, and the town centre is absolutely shocking - run down, chavvy, nowhere decent to eat/drink.

Rhubarb · 04/06/2009 13:52

cherrysunday, we moved here from Carlisle and hadn't a clue about the area. I was relying on Mumsnetters to look around properties for me!

You will not get to know an area until you live there. People have different tastes, and whereas you might get people raving about a particular place, you could visit it and find that you don't like it. Or a place that has been slagged off, you might find friendly and full of community spirit.

Search for Frome in the local papers and see what kind of stories they run on the town. That'll give you an idea of what's going on the town and what there is to do around there.

OrmIrian · 04/06/2009 13:52

Mells is very lovely. Near Nunney.

Thanks MP. I'm bearing up

OrmIrian · 04/06/2009 13:52

And so is Wells.
