Hi

We're going to view 4 houses there on Saturday, feeling very nervous would be moving away from my family and friends and closer to in laws (must be mad!)

We're on south coast at the mo

Is it nice/friendly etc?

Any thoughts/advice gratefully received!

TIA

Oh that reminded me, they have a first and middle school system and all the kids then go to Frome College at about 14.

luvaduck · 04/06/2009 13:54

not so sure about wells - think its full of crystals shops and glastonbury hippies. pretty to look at though.

OrmIrian · 04/06/2009 13:55

No no that's Glastonbury. Well is a bit more mainstream.

cherrysunday · 04/06/2009 13:57

I love the advice on here! thanks

Will definitely look into those other areas.

The primary schools do look pretty good.

Dh would probably go to London twice a week but could stay at friends overnight he does IT stuff but might need to get work in Bath/Bristol.

love surrounding countryside so thought it might be good for ds's?

I live quite close to wells (15 mins north)
really not convinced. people are a little strange?? (I normally go in the day though so most people working)
but think i might be a city girl after all so am prob biased!
its just a long way from anywhere

Rhubarb · 04/06/2009 14:00

Chippenham then.

1hr 20mins on train to Paddington. Regular services.
All coach routes and bus routes too.
Very near motorway for Bath, Bristol and Swindon.

Also is surrounded by pretty villages and countryside - Malmesbury just up road from Chippenham and is lovely, but Chippenham is more affordable for houses.

Rhubarb · 04/06/2009 14:00

Oh and schools, dunno about primary but in Chippenham they have Sheldon Secondary which is one of the best schools in the country, reputedly.

luvaduck · 04/06/2009 14:02

yeh agree chippenham may be a a better bet

bath is great for kids - has all the amenities but not so massive and sprawling like bristol - so if you can be close a real bonus IMO

OrmIrian · 04/06/2009 14:14

"its just a long way from anywhere "

You see being a non-city person I don't understand that sentiment at all. Does somewhere have to be massive to count as 'anywhere'? There are lots of places round here that I count as 'anywhere' that are very small - places that I like and know and where people that I care about live. It's a difference in perception I suppose.

morningpaper · 04/06/2009 14:16

Yes but Orm if her DH is commuting to London, then it's a long way there compared to even the commute from Bridgy - i.e. 2 hours on the train, a direct link

ReginaCovington · 04/06/2009 14:17

Its a shit place.

luvaduck · 04/06/2009 14:19

absolutely
very much depends if you are city person or country person
if OP is moving from a city then even if she fancies a change I would say beware - you may find it too quiet (as I have)
(really wish i was a country person. am more of a "village but no more than 5/10 mins drive from nice city" person)

cherrysunday · 04/06/2009 14:20

Oh god - why is it shit Regina?

OP posts:
OrmIrian · 04/06/2009 14:23

My post was in response to luvaduck who was talking about Wells. I agree that commuting is hell on wheels and needs to be as easy as possible.

OrmIrian · 04/06/2009 14:25

It's funny but when I was a child we had a big house and garden in the country. Our neighbours were all .5 a mile away at least. When I went to play at friend's houses it always shocked me that you could hear other people through the hedge It felt very strange. It took me a long long time to get used to being in a town and developing the sort of blinkers that you need to cope with a terraced house and a small garden.

GeneHunt · 04/06/2009 14:27

Regina always says it's shit.

ReginaCovington · 04/06/2009 14:27
  1. too small
  2. too far from sea
cherrysunday · 04/06/2009 14:32

At the mo we live a half hour walk from the sea but I've realised I've not gone for a month!

I like the old houses in Frome I can't live in a new build or a 30s semi or ex counsel on edge of village.

morningpaper · 04/06/2009 14:33

Well if you are not going to compromise on the house then you will compromise on other things e.g. culture and Nice Things To Do

I think if you can accept that then fair enough

GeneHunt · 04/06/2009 14:34

Can you link to the houses? I'll tell you if they are in a nice area.

Rhubarb · 04/06/2009 14:34

cherry, you're a woman after me own heart there!

littlerach · 04/06/2009 14:35

If you are an artist, this may inereset you.

WE went here last year and loved it.

And this is nice for food, especially in the summer.

GeneHunt · 04/06/2009 14:36

MP, sometimes Giant Haystacks comes to Frome for exhibition wrestling. I have met the Worzels and done cheese rolling. It's a cultural wonderland!

morningpaper · 04/06/2009 14:37

I just snorting muesli into my nose

it really hurt
