Please, please, PLEASE help me with my upstairs neighbours and their builders. the builders are brutes, they spit on our stairs, flick fag ash everywhere, the whole hallway is a PIT and they utterly, utterly REFUSE to close the door of the flat upsta...

we've spoken to our neighbours about it (as have the people upstairs to them) and the builder has basically said that if they 'pander' to us then they won't finish the job on time. PANDER?! they are revolting, disgusting, the scum of the earth, i hate them. but our neighbours can't control them, no-one can...

and of course the noise and dust are bad, really bad, but somehow it would be easier to bear if they weren't being such utter cunts at the same time.

the work, by the way, is pulling down pretty much every internal wall of a massive victorian flat, moving kitchens, bathrooms, wetrooms etc. it's a massive job and we're the ones suffering the most because it's happening above us. (in fact, they've cracked our ceilings and WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH OUR INSURANCE cos they're refusing liability. we have photos, though).

we hear the noise above us and then a couple of milliseconds later we hear it amplified back through the hallway, like a big acoustic guitar. it's torture.

we can't live like this, it's impossible, me and dh both work from home and can't make a phone call during the day and dd is shaking every time the drilling starts. we've had to put her into nursery more so it's costing us money for them to do their work, never mind lost earnings.

i phoned the council and they've yet to phone me back... it's been a few days. does anyone have any experience of this? are there people i should be speaking to? please help, i'm going a bit mad with this. it's been three weeks and it's going to be at least another five, apparently.

Aitch · 18/08/2008 21:45

ah, that's true. six mos preg in that spotty dress, worked wonderfully. and i'm in the fooking hospital all the time cos they think i'm going to develop pre-eclampsia BECAUSE OF THE BUILDERS...

HumphreyHassock · 18/08/2008 21:49

Ooh Aitch, congratulations on your pregnancy!
So sorry you're having to put up with all this shite though.

Aitch · 18/08/2008 21:51

i'm due on the eleventh of october, but have been informed that i don't have a cat in hell's chance of getting that far... if they can get me to 38 weeks (am 32 and a half) they'll consider themselves lucky. and should i say what flavour it is?

HumphreyHassock · 18/08/2008 21:52

spiiiiiiillllllllllllllllllll!

squeaver · 18/08/2008 21:53

God builders are the worst aren't they? I've had a bit of this myself although not nearly as bad as this!

I'm sure you've thought of all this but are the guys on the job the bosses of this company? Can you speak to head office if they're not? Are your neighbours project managing the job themselves or is there an architect you can get to have a word?

My bf's dh is in the building trade and I'm pretty sure I'd know what he'd do: find some "bad types" of his own and send them round to "have a word".... Got a feeling you're not going like this solution.

Congratulations on the baby btw!

hoxtonchick · 18/08/2008 21:53

you had PE last time didn't you? keep those legs crossed & think calming thoughts (fat bloody chance). are you on bp meds? i have pre-existing hypertension & fair rattled with the amount of methyldopa i took when pg.

DO TELL the sex. pleeeeeeeeeeeeease!

expatinscotland · 18/08/2008 21:54

it might not get nasty at all.

most of the cases i see don't.

they may just want to stump up to keep the peace.

which they should be because there's a good case they are liable for damage in your home as the result of building work.

DH liked your place! he thought it had character.

Aitch · 18/08/2008 21:55

no, but i have essential hypertension so always threaten with it. last time waters broke at 38 weeks and was then induced cos of strep b. really i'm a walking disaster area.

and the boss cunt is the boss of the company...

no, i'm just a bit jinxy... cos of stuff and stuff.

the neighbours are right up against the wall financially, i know it. we'd be fucking them up if we asked them for any compo, most definitely.

hoxtonchick · 18/08/2008 21:59

'we'd be fucking them up if we asked them for any compo, most definitely. '

on the other hand, they are fucking you, at the very least, your excess and no-claims bonus in addition to the childcare expenses.

potentially a bit big style depending on what exactly the damage is to the ceiling and how it may affect your home's resale value.

you'll need to pay someone to assess that.

not to mention, your health is invaluable.

expatinscotland · 18/08/2008 22:05

they can't be that up against the wall financially if they can afford a mortgage and another rent.

sorry, but for many, they have to live in a building site because it is beyond their means to pay for two dwellings.
