Do you think this kitchen will date rapidly?

We're having a new kitchen as part of our extension plans, and a chap from Howdens is coming next week to discuss plans etc with us. I suspect I need to have more of a clue about what we want.

We intend to live in our current house for the forseeable future so want a kitchen I will love forever but also want to be mindful of resale value. So, what to you think of:

come on, be honest

Do you think it will date quickly, and do you think it is a love it or hate it kitchen?

Thanks!

i don't think it will date at all, it's quite retro in design, particularly the curved units. i like it but the only thing that would put me off is the high gloss finish. when we were looking at new kitchens we were steered away from a gloss finish as with little ones around, they show up grease marks, hand prints and are hard to keep clean looking.

lucykate · 31/07/2008 14:01

forgot to mention, have also heard good reports about howdens kitchens, they have been recommended to me in the past, we went for ikea in the end though.

hana · 31/07/2008 14:01

gloss isn't hard to keep clean looking at all - we have a white gloss and it's easy peasy to clean - have young kids so lots of fingerprints etc etc.surely better to see the dirt than not to see it? and then not get wiped off?

lovelysongbird · 31/07/2008 14:02

if you go for white i think it looks the cleanest imo.
bit like white bathroom suites look cleaner iykwim
if its a modern house i think you should go modern.

lovelysongbird · 31/07/2008 14:03

i agree hana, esp if its slab like, ie no shaker frame etc
we have it so we should know!

llareggub · 31/07/2008 14:06

Well, I shall put it on the shortlist as the ipod one and discuss with DH.

I am glad to hear good reports on Howdens. Our builder is pushing us that way and has also given us a quote of £1500 for installation, which we thought was pretty good.

We just need to get going because DH is running a business from home and we need spaaaaaaaaace.

did you howdens and mfi are the same company?
often you find exactley the same mfi kitchen in howdens cheaper.

lovelysongbird · 31/07/2008 14:14

although they do not both sell ALL the same ranges.
howdens is alot cheaper ime

bundle · 31/07/2008 14:15

shudder @ mfi

I don't really like gloss
and wouldn't grey look a bit "oh, did it used to be white?"

lovelysongbird · 31/07/2008 14:18

grey gray can look that way, ils have light grey tiles in the bathroom, look like they used to be white

andiem · 31/07/2008 14:18

we bought our kitchen from these guys
they are the same as JL ones but sold by a different comany
they will do a design the units come ready made so your builder could fit them
after having ours 6 people we know have bought kitchens from them

whatchance · 31/07/2008 14:19

I've bought from Howdens before and they were good. But just to flag that the builder may be pushing you down that route because he may be getting a discount off their list price. We bought direct from Howdens as we have a limited company (so set up a trade account with Howdens) and we were automatically given a significant discount (around 50% from memory) off the order.

llareggub · 31/07/2008 14:22

Oh I don't know. There is so much choice.

OP posts:
lovelysongbird · 31/07/2008 14:24

wac your probably right.

GrapefruitMoon · 31/07/2008 14:27

I like it but it might date....especially the handles. A more classic look would be shaker style - you should be able to get that in a matt or gloss finish and in pale colours.

However, if you are having an open plan space, you might be better off going for something in wood that doesn't look too kitcheny - to look more like sideboards, etc - say along the lines of Howden's High Gloss Larch?

piratecat · 31/07/2008 14:31

yeah the kitchen is ok, but not keen on the handles.

the oak one is so far removed form the first one, there must be so much choice. I just have the one that came with the house. I do like the tops tho, in my house they are dark granite effect.

piratecat · 31/07/2008 14:33

mine looks a bit like the Broadoak style in contemporary, in adiem's thread.

llareggub · 31/07/2008 14:36

ooh, I quite like the High Gloss Larch, but not in green or red.

OP posts:
andiem · 31/07/2008 14:48

I have the broadoak one

Pinkjenny · 31/07/2008 14:49

I love it.

Love it love it love it.

llareggub · 31/07/2008 14:51

I like yours, andiem

OP posts:
andiem · 31/07/2008 14:58

we have black granite work tops and it does look fab even if I say so myself
my bf chose the same one as did a neighbour but I was flattered by their copying

mankymummy · 31/07/2008 14:59

sorry but... zippi you have a SPARE house?!!!

noddyholder · 31/07/2008 15:25

The hi gloss is already dated The other one is lovely and classic and can look contemporary with the right worktops tiles and appliances. Most houses i have viewed have had hi gloss and they look smudgy and a bit last year.BUT if you love it get it

hana · 31/07/2008 16:03

don't agree with that (dated gloss)
dh specifies a lot of high end flats in chelsea and still tops is a white gloss kitchen
