New build delayed until who knows when and our rental runs out

We were meant to be moving into our new build in Sept/Oct but now its been delayed and our rental runs out at the end of October. I feel like Ive completely messed this up tbh.

Its me, dh, ds7 and dd3 and im pregnant with dc3 due in January. We also have an elderly cat who is 16 and doesnt deal brilliantly with being moved around. We rented this house thinking wed only be here until the new one was ready.

The developer is now saying November/December but they wont actually give us a date, just that theyre hoping to have a better idea soon. Our landlord already has someone else lined up for the house from November. He said he might let us stay a few extra weeks but cant promise anything beyond that.

Dh thinks we should just get another short term rental but then wed have to pack everything up, move, unpack, then potentially do it all again a few weeks later, while im heavily pregnant. I know its not the end of the world but I really dont want to do it twice.

Would you stay put and try and get the landlord to extend, take another rental or be pushing the developer for something more definite?

Absolutely push the developer, everyday if needs be. This happend to me buying a new build but we were selling also and the buyers of our property were threatening to drop out, collapsing a chain. It was amazing how quickly things then got done! Good luck, it's totally understandable why you wouldn't want to move another 2 times in your circumstances.

You can’t stay put without first agreeing to extend. You’ll be screwing over the landlord and the next tenant.

All you can do is pack up your stuff, put it in storage, and rent somewhere short term with what you need in terms of clothes and belongings.

Yeah I think worst case pack minimal stuff as if you were going on holiday and find a short term rental. Put everything in storage.

cost will be an issue and I’d be trying to shove that on the developer. I agree hound him daily for a date and a quicker completion if possible

yes i know, I wouldnt just stay without agreeing it with the landlord. he knows whats happening and has said he might be able to give us a few extra weeks, its just not definite yet. I think storage is probably what were going to have to do tbh, I just really hadnt thought wed be in this position when we took the rental in the first place. dh is much more relaxed about the whole thing than me 😂

We were in a very similar situation a few years ago.

I was 8 months pregnant with our second child. We were buying a flat, and living in rented. The landlord of the flat we were buying said the tenants would be out by the middle of Oct. So we (very foolishly, in hindsight!) gave notice on our flat to move end of October.

A few weeks before we're due to move, we're told the tenants are now waiting to be evicted so they can be housed by the council, so we can't move in until January! it was so stressful.
We ended up crashing at a mates place for a few weeks, going down to stay with my dad for a couple of weeks, and then had to airbnb indefinitely. The whole time having to take our son to nursery and go to work from wherever we were living (which is East London - so we were moving all over the place!)

I ended up giving birth while crashing at another mates house while she was away. We moved in when my son was about 6 days old!

I don't really have any advice, just that we've been there, and although it was so stressful at the time, I don't feel that way looking back at it (just feels like a weird thing which happened to us!) If you weren't bothered about being a bit of a arse, you can technically stay where you're living and wait to be evicted, which you can technically do. But it would result in the new tenant being screwed over.. Depends how much that would bother you!

But I get it. I've done it! And it was actually kind of fine in hindsight :)
