Roman blinds for a large Victorian bay window renovation

We’re renovating our bedroom and looking to replace the wooden Venetian blinds. House is Victorian and it’s a big bay and a single sash so a lot of window. DH not keen on curtains. Am considering fabric romans but worried about how the will look on a big window. Anyone got these and how have they worked for you?

They are ok but you will inevitably get gaps. Curtains or shutters really are the better option.

I had roman blinds in the bay in my previous house and wouldn't choose them again. Keeping the bottoms perfectly aligned drove me mad, and on the two narrower window panes they looked oddly disproportionate because they were so tall relative to their width. In the end, I replaced them with curtains on a bendy bay rail and had a fabric box pelmet made, which I much preferred.

@Tortephant - yes considering shutters but they are very expensive, and I don’t know if I love them enough for that. Might have to overrule DH.

Find a local curtain maker the go through the options with you. Well made Roman blinds can look beautiful. You’ll want to ensure the pattern matches across the three
blinds.

Did you see this post a week or so ago? These are roller rather than Roman blinds so will have more movement in them. But the photo is probably a good reference for you

Not a fan of the roller blind but yes can see the gap issue.

I’m planning on something plain as window is v big and I’m generally not a pattern fan. But yes I do need to consult someone.

Discuss this then and mock up some visuals. In a period property, and with large windows, I would go for a pattern and texture of some sort. I find plain draws the life out of the room in any period house I have lived in. With the size too that will be a massive block of single colour. I'd be cautious of 'plain'.

Lots of second hand shutters available particularly suitable for Victorian bay windows with little or minimal modification. Bought some myself for a fraction of the price new. Personally hate roman blinds in bay windows and really difficult to keep straight as previous poster mentioned

We did this in a previous house. No gaps, they were beautifully made and a fabric pelmet brought it all together. They were a Sanderson silk and I absolutely loved them. We moved house and managed to reuse them across two rooms. I still have the pelmet in the loft because I couldn't bear to part with it. 😂

I have an Edwardian house . It has 3 very large bay windows, one of which has french windows in the middle. I used to have curtains in all 3, but they were difficult to pull around the windows because they were so heavy. I have roman blinds in all 3 now. They were tailor made for each bay. One set by a local curtain maker and the other 2 sets by John Lewis ( because the curtain maker retired.) The pattern matches across each bay and all 3 sets are interlined and hang very well.

However they are extremely expensive. Over £2500 per window, with the biggest bay (which has the french window) being over £3k.I put the last set up 2 years ago so they will be more now. I emphasise though that my bays are very big.

My advice would be to use a specialist curtain maker who will come and out measure each window. I have used online blind makers elsewhere in the house and they are great, but I wouldn't do that for a bay window.

Good luck.
