Can anyone answer my stupid last minute renovation questions?

Moving in very soon after the whole thing became a much bigger project than we thought. Now some new fun problems have come up and I’m stuck.

To start with…

  1. who do I need to get to replace our shower? Builder was supposed to sort it but “it’s broken”. I think it’s an electric shower. Plumber/electrician/handy person?

  2. Loft ladder seems to have been unceremoniously torn down by the builders. Are we likely to be able to re attach this? And hooow?

There will be more 🫣 Thank you!

Loft ladder, I’d get a new one and you should be able to fit yourself,9” or general handyman if you have one.

shower, you need to know what type it is and what’s broken with it. If the roses are blocked, they will unscrew and you simply buy another and screw on. Likewise any hose leaks or so on, you can do this yourself.

if it’s the electric motor probably not worth repairing.
some plumbers are qualified and happy to undertake basic electrics like replacing one, others won’t be. So electrician. Not a handyman IMO.

Thank you. I know I sound dim about the shower. It just won’t turn on so I’m assuming it’s the electrics - so I buy a new one and find an electrician, that’s great thank you. Or should I get an electrician to look at it first and buy one on their recommendation?

Loft ladder ditto, I expect someone broke it and they’ve just left it lying around otherwise would have been put back.

Next question - another of our lovely builders broke the handle off one of the bedroom windows. It was presumably loose anyway. Can these be replaced?

For the shower, don’t buy a replacement until someone has checked it. If it’s an electric shower, the fault could be the pull-cord/isolator, supply or the unit itself, and the new shower may need the right cable, MCB and RCD protection. An electrician who works on showers can test it and advise on a like-for-like replacement.

A broken window handle is often a straightforward replacement: take the old one off and match the fixing-hole centres, spindle length and lock type. If the spindle or mechanism is damaged as well, a window repair person can replace the whole mechanism. I’d leave the loft ladder unused until the frame and fixings have been checked; if anything is bent or missing, replacing the ladder as a set is usually safer than trying to reuse damaged parts.

The shower is usually on a separate circuit - check that it is switched on at the fuse-box. The fuse might have gone.
