What colour to paint a whole house for sale?

Our empty house is on the market and it’s admittedly a bit tatty looking so I’d like to get it decorated in the hope of generating a bit more interest. What would be the best single colour (preferably Dulux) to use throughout?

NOT magnolia

Anothercake · 29/09/2026 16:40

Why does it have to be throughout? The only colour suitable for that is magnolia and that screams unloved HMO.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 29/09/2026 16:41

White surely. Anything else means cutting in ceilings and skirtings carefully whereas white will freshen it all up and neutralise without adding anything anyone needs to undo. They can add their own colours later.

White

I think it's personal preference. If a house was white throughout I'd feel it had no character and was uninviting. I'd go for a light cream.

Natural Hessian a touch of warmth but still neutral.

I'd paint it all white - but then I live with all white walls and woodwork! I find it very calming.

White can be a bit cold in north facing rooms or where there isn't much natural light. If you want to stick with Dulux then I'd go for Jasmine white which has a tiny bit of warmth. You can do the ceilings in it too, so no cutting in.

White or cream. Interesting that some people are very pro one or the other-I don't see a lot of difference, in that both look clean, don't shrink a space and are neutral, as in won't clash with anything the buyer brings, so even maximalists would be able to live with it for a while before putting up their pink and orange spotted wallpaper.

All white, looks fresh, the furniture gives it colour pops.

My recommendation whatever you do is to choose a class 1 scrubbable paint. I painted my hall and stairs in Johnstons version of this, acrylic matt, and I cannot believe that it still looks pristine a year on. I had one mark that just wiped off with one of those white magic sponge things.

I have a north facing room that is painted Dulux Jasmine White, it is more cream in my opinion but this whole house was Jasmine white when we moved in. We just kept it in the north facing room, it never looks cold.

White

Most new builds come in dulux timeless. That’s a popular neutral.

Natural hessian, almond white, timeless...

Something just a touch warmer than brilliant white. What colors are the floors? If grey, you will likeky need a slightly Grey white.

gratefulmezze · 29/09/2026 18:16

I agree with those who've said natural hessian

The floors are mostly real wood apart from the kitchen which is dark grey tile and the bathrooms which are vinyl.

A PP asked why I want it the same throughout? Mostly for speed, and neutrality. At the moment it’s very much to our taste and it seems to be putting off buyers.

Are you prepared to share the rightmove link?

Could you leave the kutchen & bathroom as is, and freshen the rest?
