Hello,
First winter in my draughty north facing mid renovation Victorian house looming. I’m already cold. What hacks do you have. Do I need small heaters? Heated blankets? Dehumidifier? There must be some way to make it better apart from hot water bottles. I have central heating, but need to seriously supplement it.

For second hand curtains, try boot sales, charity shops, Facebook marketplace, local Freecycle. There are also businesses like Curtain Exchange . You’ll get much quality for your money if you go secondhand.
Make sure you have the measurements of the drop from where the rail will be , to where you want the hem to be, and make a note if you can go longer or shorter…like someone else said, extra long curtains pooling onto the floor can help trap heat in. Carry the measurements around with you so that you can get bargains when you see them. For the width, measure the space you want the curtains to fill, and then the width you need is ideally double that, or you could get away with 1.5 times the width or less if you don’t want them too gathered. You need to be careful to check whether you are buying or paying for a pair or a single drop.
Windows in Victorian houses tend to be much bigger than in most modern houses, so it might take some searching to get some that are big enough.
Thermal Lined curtains would be ideal, preferably in a heavy fabric like velvet, but you can buy separate linings if you need to.
Then fill the gaps between the floorboards, you can use a silicone filler for that, it is easy, if time consuming to do. However it is the sort of thing you can get a teen to help with- I had a very efficient 10 year old help me do mine!
