Which tradesperson do I need? Food stench in bedroom above kitchen

Having a sleepless night due to overwhelming food stench in bedroom directly about kitchen. This is a 2019 Bellway new build, and have always noticed food smells in the home and particularly strong smells in this bedroom but tonight is worse than ever despite hours with the window open now.

We naively assumed this was normal household smells but neighbours with same set up don’t report same issues at all. Don’t want to just blindly replace extractor in case it’s more of an installation issue.

Could it be blowing air behind the walls or into the ceiling void and then seeping in through gaps/light fitting? Instead of extracting outside? Who can we contact to investigate this?

Any advice, ideas or experience welcomed please

Do you have a kitchen door? Do you close the door when cooking? Open plan cooking can make a house very smelly upstairs.

You need someone to check your extractor set up. Is it one that vents outside or recirculates?

What do you actually mean by 'overwhelming food stench'? What have you cooked tonight?

A handyperson who does kitchens would be able to look.

We don’t have a kitchen door, it’s open plan downstairs, but the smell is only on that bedroom and still occurs if that bedroom door is closed suggesting it’s coming in another way

Last night made salmon in air fryer and boiled some veg on the stove that’s all. But could smell what I think was like sweet chilli chicken grease all night. It smelt like old food, like I could smell the bin or something (definitely not that!)

it’s been like this for ages but I think I forget a big over summer, last night had the window closed for a few hours before bed and smell was BAD

If it’s a rotting smell, it could well be drains, not cooking. New builds are notorious for rushed plumbing. Is there a bathroom near where the smell is bad?

There was a rotten food/bin juice smell in my kitchen a couple years back. I cleaned everything, emptied every cupboard etc.

Turned out it was my reclusive neighbour had died and was starting to fester.

Do you have a neighbour joined onto that side of the house you haven't seen for a few days as it doesn't long for a smell to start?

A new build house will have warranty. Contact the builder.

Could be that the vent from extractor is below bedroom window

Is It affected by weather or wind direction -could even blow from next door - we had bats -smell goes up when it’s warm

It’s a detached house, no dead neighbours 😳

Little update (the question still stands as this is long standing issue) but my husband has messaged to say he’s discovered why last night was particularly bad. My little one had spilt water the day before which had wet the rug and a cushion on the floor and they had been left wet. And they were right next to my head (it’s a floor bed with a toddler). So they must have absorbed even more smells from the night before when we really cooked loads. And they were just lay there starting to give a sort of rotting food smell (lovely 🤢)

so at least the urgency is reduced, but long term smells are definitely clearly getting into that room in particular, way more than they should be. Wonder if the rug is a clue that it’s coming through floor boards?

AI suggests to speak to a HVAC company but when I go on local websites it’s all about air con and not sure they would be right person?

Another fun little update 🥲 extractor fan has never been connected for the whole time we lived here!!
So it’s just been sucking up air and then it’s just seeped straight back into the room. No idea why that bedroom gets the worst of it but that makes sense why whole house has stunk for so long. Thanks Bellway 👍 😩

If ever bought another new build this would be first thing I would check!
