Short-term broadband and energy contracts before buying after house sale

I am close to exchanging on the sale of my house following a relationship breakdown. I’ve found a rental to go into with two older children. Am looking at broadband and energy providers for the new place but they all seem to be 18-24 month contracts. I’m hoping to find a house to purchase soon so that I won’t be in the rental for more than 6-9 months. What have other people done in this situation? Can you take the contract with you to another property? Or do you end up paying for all the unused months?

We got an EE mobile broadband hub when we were between houses last year. We have been so impressed with it we have kept it rather than having broadband wired in.

You can bring your contract with you when you move, I was signed up with BT for broadband and Octopus for my gas and electric. Both were two year contracts and we ended up moving after a year. We just let them know we were moving and they made the switch, we didn't have any issues.

The only thing you have to be careful of, more so with things like internet providers, is that they offer the service in the area you end up moving to. You could end up paying a fee for ending the contract early, but saying that, my partner tells me he was able to end a contract early when he moved to an area where Virgin media didn't provide the service and they waived the fee.

Just get a rolling contract for your broadband, I've just got one for mine as I'm going to be buying a house once my late parents house is sold. I'm paying £26 a month for gigabit ultrafast broadband.

A mobile scheme, you can take with you when you move, I have a SIM only scheme on the phone, unlimited calls and texts. I think there is a limit on broadband use, but I never reach it.
