A move to Newport in Wales…

I want to move closer to my daughter in Bristol. Retired, cash buyer, budget £150k. Newport seems the obvious answer but not sure about the areas. I want a quiet life for me and my dog, small garden, semi rural - could I find this in Newport, and any suggestions on areas would be very much appreciated. TIA.

Wow everyone is so dramatic on here. I lived in Newport for a few years, it is really not much different to living anywhere else as long as you dont like in Pill 😂

It has awesome transport links, m4 access etc.

Newport is genuinely a dump. You couldn’t pay me to live there. I moved from Bristol to the valleys and I love it here. Gets a bad rep but the scenery is stunning, it’s peaceful, people are more friendly and I bought a five bed house for a fraction of the cost in Bristol. The train station is a ten min walk from my house, takes me directly to Cardiff and the a465 goes east or west in no time.

I've lived in Bristol and I didn't like it.

Newport is probably fine if you find the right place for you and your dog.

One of my colleagues when I lived in Bristol was from Pill and he was great. He might have been a one-off though.

How about Chepstow?

Barry might be worth a look. It has rail links and is close to Cardiff, so you could get to Bristol on public transport.

How about Newbridge or Ystrad Mynach? Both have stations so easy access to Cardiff/Newport and therefore Bristol.

I live in Newport. Yes, the town centre is awful and some of the deprived areas where you’ll get more house for your money I definitely wouldn’t live in. I currently live in Rogerstone and love it. For more rural then head towards Rhiwderin then onto Caerphilly where you have Machen which is lovely. Not sure that 150k will do it though. Like someone else has said, huge extremes in Newport, it’s not all a dump, some really nice areas, but then the house prices are much more than 150k. There is a part of Rogerstone which is a bit cheaper though, can be rough in parts but lots of friends live that way and more affordable. Definitely book a hotel in some of the places you’re considering and see what you think.

Id look at the outskirts of Bristol (Kingswood, Warmley, Long well Green, Emerson's Green, Downend, or Keynsham or Chepstow.

I wouldn't go for Emerson's Green, it's basically now just one gigantic housing estate and I hear they have a lot of problems with antisocial behaviour. They did used to have an amazing Italian restaurant though!

I'd say Emerson's Green is better than Newport though

I grew up in Newport and still have family there. You can get a flat in some better areas of Newport for £150k but you will struggle a lot more to get a house for the money. I would not choose to live there again but it does have the benefit of easy access and good transport links

Rogerstone and High Cross.
Regular buses to Newport and Cardiff. Has a train station Pye Corner..is a Valleys line but you can connect to the main line.
Pretty village with a real community. You can walkni to Newport Town Centre if you wanted.
Its been 18 months since I was last there hut as far as high street shopping hoe's...Newport Town was doing ok for shops. It still has some chains alongside the standard nail and tattoo places every high street has these days.
1 downside...the wrong side of Brynglas tunnel on M4 for Bristol.

Did you miss the "budget £150k" in the OP?

The town centre is struggling and run down with most retail moved out and very little white collar work. Has potential for business with the railway going right through but gets ignored with investment. Plenty of nice places to live on the suberbs like High Cross, Allt-yr-yn, Rogerstone, Caerleon, St Julians, Glan Lyn and Langstone. Usk valley and mountain fresh air is close

I'm not entirely sure why people are slagging off Newport city centre when OP specifically said she wanted somewhere semi-rural. i.e. didn't seem to have any intention of wanting to live in the CITY of Newport, but rather somewhere in the COUNTY. Which, as several people have pointed out, has quite a few nice towns and villages. Albeit £150k wouldn't get you that far in most of them.

I'd narrow down the search depending on if you are happy to drive or would be reliant on public transport.

A friend has moved from SW England to Caerleon and loves it but honestly £150K will probably not get you anything in the nice areas OP.

This is a nice little place but not sure if you can have pets and also service charge is quite high even though its a house
