A white that’s not too white?

Has anyone got any recommendations for a soft fresh white paint for a south facing room? I love Egyptian cotton but it’s reading champagne in this particular room. I’d love something lighter but brilliant white is too white.

I’ll attach an inspo picture from AI with wonky curtains 😂

I have linen wash by Little Greene in my kitchen, I really like it

wanderingwillows · 03/07/2026 19:29

Strong white by F&B

Timeless from Dulux, I also really like Almond White which is probably closer to your inspo pic.

Chocdown · 03/07/2026 19:56

@OneMintBear they both look promising, especially almond white. I’ll do some swatches

@wanderingwillows I love the look of it, but never used F&B before. Is it worth the ££?

@hellofrommyothername it looks promising, but I can’t find where to buy it easily locally. And I’m lazy 🫣

Fuji by Paint & Paper Library.

NCS S 0601-Y is a code for a very nice, soft off white which is not yellow

Dulux Jasmine white is a soft white

Dimity by F&B

Strong White by F&B or Slaked Lime by Little Greene.

Nativetree · 03/07/2026 22:13

If you want a definite white that’s warm and not brilliant, is not cream, yellow or grey, my suggestion is Shirting from Little Greene. It’s a proper white though. I have it on my ceilings.

When you factor in the costs and time spent in properly decorating a room, saving 20 or 30 quid is neither here nor there if you’re going to be looking at it for the next ten years. Unless you use bog standard cheapo stuff, you’re going to need to spend at least 70 odd squid plus for a 5l tin.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 03/07/2026 23:12

Dulux Timeless (more budget) or Coat Naptime for a splurge.

C8H10N4O2 · 04/07/2026 15:41

Slaked Lime from Little Greene is the only soft white I found which works in every light aspect. Coverage was also very good.

None of the local decorators like using F&B (especially the trad colours) due to the paint quality and coverage and lower durability. The price difference is a lot more than a few quid over time. Their modern synthetic paints I think are fine but obviously you lose the point of difference.

I find this site useful for matching a paint to other brands (I’ve entered Slaked Lime as an example, it covers all the main ranges):

I like Lime White from Little Green and the palest shade of Bleached Lichen from Dulux.

Mossstitch · 04/07/2026 15:49

If you want cheaper, I use johnstones brilliant white matt as it's softer than most, much warmer than dulux brilliant white (and I've just seen it in asda at £8 for 5 litres)😮 unfortunately I've bought online dearer

7238SM · 04/07/2026 16:02

We've been going around in circles to find an light, hall colour. I'd suggest buying samples and seeing how the colour is with your lighting etc. Dulux sell little roller samples, BUT, they are manufactured in a different factory and different county to the paint pots so the colours can be quite different!

We have Egyptian cotton in a bright room and it looks crisp, fresh and white. Its got a subtle, khaki undertone and in our hall, it looked a dirty, olive green!

Timeless was SO subtle, we couldn't even see the tester on the white wall!

Nutmeg white came out purply/pink!

Chocdown · 04/07/2026 18:34

@C8H10N4O2 that website is really helpful. We had to redecorate once after a leak from the cold water tank and the paint we’d used was discontinued - it’s so useful to be able to find a close match and just do one wall!

@7238SM yes that is very true, I’ve swatched so much I have stripy walls! None of them are quite right, so hoping recommendations will narrow down the field.

I had this before trying to find a true grey that was neither blue nor beige. I’m just fussy, I guess! My husband thinks they all look the same. He’s wrong 😂

Our decorator loves Timeless and uses it a lot in his own home (and he's seen a lot of paint colours).

We have Dulux Porcelain Doll in our kitchen (south facing) and it works really well. White but not blinding.
