A white that’s not too white?

Has anyone got any recommendations for a soft fresh white paint for a south facing room? I love Egyptian cotton but it’s reading champagne in this particular room. I’d love something lighter but brilliant white is too white.

I’ll attach an inspo picture from AI with wonky curtains 😂

Clock face, white tie, Ponting? The last two by farrow and ball I think.

Chocdown · 04/07/2026 18:43

@Dopsicle I like both of those, I’m going to try them and add to my swatch wall. Thank you

Our decorator loves Timeless and uses it a lot in his own home (and he's seen a lot of paint colours).

We have Dulux Porcelain Doll in our kitchen (south facing) and it works really well. White but not blinding.

I bought Timeless in a panic as B&Q was doing their” get out now” closing announcement and the decorator was coming the next morning to paint the kitchen ceiling ( last opportunity before kitchen fitted). It looks great. I’m a convert.

Timeless is a really great shout most of the time, I have it in several rooms, but my understanding was that the OP wanted a milder version of Egyptian Cotton, which is another colour I have used a lot in a south-facing house with huge windows.

I've juat used lick white 05 in our hall, got to say, I'm really impressed by the paint. We used the one that can be used on all surfaces. I liked it so much that ive also done my lounge in green 19 and will be doing beige 02 in the bedroom. Previously a big f and b fan, bit much preferred lick.

RoseOliviaAu · 04/07/2026 20:05

COAT’s Shell Grotto is also a beautiful soft white

@C8H10N4O2 that website is really helpful. We had to redecorate once after a leak from the cold water tank and the paint we’d used was discontinued - it’s so useful to be able to find a close match and just do one wall!

I’ve found it very useful at times both for the near matches and the RGB/HLC values (useful for matching a paint not in their brand list or eg a Pantone colour) .
I’ve saved a fair bit of money using it for eg DC bedrooms where I knew redecorating was more frequent. Of the pricier paint brands I’ve had the best results /cost effectiveness from Little Greene (I was a sceptic). Of the mid prices good old Dulux trade does best.
My decorators will use whatever the customer wants but tend to be wary of both F&B (the trad paints) and some own brands as they are judged by the results and find these paints less reliable.

I use a lot of paint as I try to do at least one or two rooms per year and I’m not a patterned wallpaper fan.

I’ve just had almond white in my South facing sitting room. It’s sort of ok, inoffensive, but verging on magnolia in my opinion.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/07/2026 17:06

I’m a big fan of Timeless.

LoafofSellotape · 05/07/2026 17:07

Egyption Cotton looks very pale neutral grey in my kitchen and nothing like white at all.

I've used Almond White and I agree with pp ,it gives magnolia vibes.

Jasmine White has a definite yellow tongue.

Timeless is what you need I think.

School House White by Farrow and Ball.
it looks great in our kitchen.

Another vote for Timeless - I was recommended it by a similar thread last year when I was looking for a warm white. It’s perfect in my south-facing kitchen.

girlwhowearsglasses · 05/07/2026 17:51

Look at F&B Shaded White. It’s supposed to be like white ‘ in the shade’ - so no creamy undertones. I’ve used a couple of times.

Chocdown · 05/07/2026 21:43

@Catarinabella yes, as you feared it leans very magnolia. Strong white by F&B is a contender though

@LoafofSellotape lots of people have recommended Timeless. I tried almond white and it was magnolia-esque. I have jasmine white in one of the kids rooms and it is yellowy to me.

I have Egyptian cotton in 2 rooms, in one it’s a greige, but in this particular room it isn’t for some reason!

Timeless from Dulux, I also really like Almond White which is probably closer to your inspo pic.

I have Timeless on my ceiling which is in my north east facing living room. It’s a lovely creamy looking white. Much warmer than bright white.

7238SM · 05/07/2026 22:46

Excuse my very basic pic!

This wall is white, having had 2-3 coats after being plastered. The far right sample is timeless- as you can see, its barely noticeable. The greeny one on the bottom is Egyptian cotton. As I said up thread, this one looked fresh and white in a brighter room and completely different to what it looked like on this wall.

I've lost the plot on the the others now, but these was a natural calico, natural hessian plus something else. One of the pinky/purple ones on the bottom left is nutmeg white.

abracadabra1980 · 05/07/2026 22:58

@7238SM- can you remember what the bottom right one is?! I've just bought Egyptian Cotton but looking at your samples, it's going to be too dark...

I have it written down on a piece of paper- somewhere! I shall have a look tomorrow and post if I find it.

lavendarwillow · 05/07/2026 23:18

Dulux Chiffon white (you might need it mixed). I find a lot of ‘off whites’ can look too greyish or yellow but this one definitely looks fresh with no weird undertone in all rooms.
