Considering a move to Suffolk from Essex, which areas are best?

Ill try to keep this short and sorry if this is poated under the wrong topic! I am a single parent and currently live in a not so nice area in Essex. Im currently living in a property which is jointly owned with my ex but its on the market to be sold. I cannot afford to buy where we currently live and wouldn't really want to stay here anyways as the area really isn't that nice.

I am looking to potentially move to Suffolk as it is cheaper than staying in Essex but I dont know anything about the area. Would anyone be able to advise of areas to avoid? Though i'm sure that any area in Suffolk is probably nicer than where I live currently 😅 I work from home and drive so train links etc are not an issue. Would like somewhere with semi decent schools and hobbies for the kids to do. However I am aware these areas will be more expensive and probably not what I can afford on a single salary. Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Avoid Ipswich - most other places in Suffolk are lovely.

I live in Ipswich and it has two major issues:

  1. Your life is dependant on whether the Orwell Bridge is open or not. There is a major crash / bad weather that closes it at least once a fortnight and when it happens you are stuffed. It is total gridlock.
  2. Most towns in Suffolk (Bury, Woodbridge, Aldeburgh, Southwold) have lovely town centres. Ipswich is like a war zone.

Personally I would buy in Felixstowe, but it is badly affected by point (1) above.

Cross reference economics data. There are some very deprived areas in Suffolk. Also check schools.

Come over the border to Norfolk 😀

Id avoid Central Ipswich (we used to live there but definitely wouldnt now). However surrounding towns are fab. Hadleigh is great for kids and fab schools, some nice areas in Stowmarket and surrounding areas like Bildeston, Kersey, Lavenham, Needham Market. Bury St Edmunds is lovely and there's some nice places in Woodbridge.

Around Woodbridge area is lovely, although Woodbridge itself is expensive. Long Melford/Sudbury is lovely too, in fact there are so many nice places to choose from. I would tend to avoid Ipswich & Haverhill

Don't write Ipswich off but just be careful where you buy. There's a few housing estates/area's that I wouldn't want to live in now. I moved here from Essex also.
I've moved around in Ipswich the last 30 yrs. I now know where to avoid, unlike when I first moved here! I live just outside town now, fairly short bus ride into the centre but further enough away that there's absolutely no trouble at all.

Thank you for your responses. It's very helpful in giving me a starting point to look! It's all a little bit overwhelming doing it by myself but I'm hopeful I'll be able to find somewhere nice for me and the kids 😊
