New sofa arrived. Massive buyers remorse. Can anyone relate?

Hi, I’m literally 6 days postpartum and very fragile so I could be irrational. Our new sofa arrived yesterday after a 10 week wait. It’s in a bespoke fabric which I chose and supplied. I feel quite shocked at how much I don’t like it. Firstly, it is so much harder than the one that we tried in the shop over three visits. I assume this is just because it’s new? It has foam cushions with a light feather layer. And the colour is so much more shocking now that I’ve seen it in our living room. I pored over fabric samples but now it’s on a bigger surface area it just looks bright and shocking. It also no longer goes with any of the other accessories in our living room and just doesn’t look very holistic because it’s such an opinionated colour.

I just don’t know what to do. It cost me £2000 and I thought I would feel excited. Do I try to get it reupholstered? Do I just live with it for a few weeks? What do I do? I feel so low.

OP has a new baby, and even if she hadn’t there’s no need to be unpleasant.

Sorry wrong reply

Kindly, you need to get a grip OP. Crying over a sofa? Really?

wtf, the sofa cost £2k! If she doesn’t like it she is 200% entitled to cry, sofas are massive it’s not like you can hide it!

If it isn't comfortable then I would contact the manufacturer irrespective of whether the material is bespoke.

It isn't as advertised in comfort and you would like a guarantee for a repair or replacement as you've spent a lot of money on it.

The13thFairy · Yesterday 14:25

I love 'an opinionated colour' and will use it whenever I can.

wandawaves · Yesterday 14:26

It will definitely soften with use, don't worry about that.

The colour sounds fab, I love green.

ButterYellowHair · Yesterday 14:27

It’s just a couch. Mine cost £50 from Facebook… just be glad yours hasn’t been sat on by unknown bums like mine.

Don't panic, it's all very new. It takes around 6 to 8 weeks for the springs to bed in and for the cushions to all settle - I'm in the trade and make sofas for a living. We send out a letter with our deliveries stating this, as sometimes people are worried that they've gone for the wrong foam densities. I've got new foam core feather wrap seat cushions on my sofa and after 3 weeks they're still taking a bit of getting used to.

Not helpful now I realise at all, but we encourage all of our clients to take a large returnable sample of the fabric home before confirming. I spend a lot of time ordering half metre pieces.

Okay, thanks so much. This is reassuring. It’s foam with a feather outer layer. Both my husband and I are a bit shocked because we tried it so many times in the showroom over 3 visits, and it was the right amount of comfort…but right now it feels like a rock. We also ordered scores and scores of the fabric samples, think on a bigger surface area the colour just looks so shocking. I just read a few posts on here from a different thread which suggested that foam cushion never quite relaxes. My husband is pondering whether to take it to upholsterer to swap out this foam for something softer but that seems a bit extreme.

Awww OP I do get it; I’ve cried over many a new furniture purchase! We now have a new rule in our family that we have to live with something new for 2 weeks before we say what we think of it…experience has taught us that we usually hate it at first simply because it jars because it wasn’t there before. Give it 2 weeks before you do anything…if you still hate it then, I agree with PPs, go for throws and scatter cushions.

That’s a good rule, thank you so much. I’ll try this.

Our sofa was a similar price and when I first sat on it I thought the cushion had been replaced with brick.
They do soften up - ours took a couple of weeks.

If you can't send the sofa back, could you replace/upcycle the chair? Adding pink cushions to the green and green cushions to the pink could also make it blend in more.

Go easy on yourself - hormones are crazy at this stage and years from now, you'll likely be telling this story to someone with tears of laughter.

bigfishlittlefishtupperwarebox · Yesterday 14:36

I got a new sofa with foam seats in December and couldn't believe how solid they felt. Now they're "normal" so it's not taken too long

LovesLabradors · Yesterday 14:48

It sounds lovely OP - I'd love a grass green sofa! Years ago I went for neutral boring cream/beige sofas and I hate them now, they show every mark & stain and look scruffy. Way too much effort to replace them at the moment - I've got two, and they're huge so I'm stuck with them.

Give yourself time to get used to it - probably just the shock of having something so different.

OkayyThen · Yesterday 14:51

I can't help with the sofa situation... but I will say that 6 days PP was when my hormones massively crashed and everything felt like the end of the world. Fragile was an understatement. I think I cried at one point because the vacuum cleaner looked ugly in the house that day. So be gentle with yourself as you are very much at your most delicate hormone wise. Congratulations on your baby.

Loub1987 · Yesterday 14:51

If you are six days post partum, your child will almost certainly vomit or spill milk on it pretty soon so I wouldn’t worry!

Congratulations btw

I’ll post a picture in the morning because in late afternoon lights my camera doesn’t pick up on how bright it is. Check back? It’s basically the colour of the leaves of the house plants. But it’s next to our existing pink armchair which I just think looks silly? And I’m worried about the firmness of it all. I just don’t know how long they take to feel soft. My tailbone is killing me after hours of sitting. Just don’t trust myself in interior decisions. Now I’m crying again!

At 6 days postpartum your body has not yet knitted back together as it was before pregnancy. Your nether region must still be pretty sore too! My pelvis still hurt a lot for several weeks at least after giving birth. What does your DH think of the firmness and comfort level?

notwavingbutdrowning1 · Yesterday 15:09

Don't panic, OP! I foolishly got a made-to-order bright-orange velvet sofa a couple of years ago, which really isn't me at all. I almost cried when it was delivered - it was so bright it hurt my eyes. I spent 2 weeks avoiding the room it was in and hatching plans to get it re-covered in a gentle calming blue velvet and hang the cost. Then I cautiously put a couple of cushions and a rug on it, which improved it immensely. Now I don't even notice it, and visitors love it. Re the hardness of the cushions, I had this problem with a sofa 10 years ago but now I can't believe I ever thought it was an issue - I have adjusted to it. Ditto the metal handles on my kitchen units, which hurt my hands at first and now they don't.

bridgetreilly · Yesterday 15:16

What colour are your walls? Repainting might be another way to make the sofa and chair work together. Pink and green is a great combination to play with.

WydeStrype · Yesterday 15:22

6 days post birth I was so emotional. Cried about everything. Do not make any knee perk decisions.

Throws, blankets, cushions and a few weeks

I’d just buy a nice neutral throw and cushions that might help time it down while you acclimatise x

eatreadsleeprepeat · Yesterday 15:41

Like others have said this is not the ideal time to make decisions. I am sure it will soften and you will mould it over time.
Definitely put some neutral or pink or pink and green patterned cushions on and maybe a throw? Similarly carry the green to other areas, cushions, throws, plant pots etc.
Two other things which might change how vivid it looks is changing the tone of lightbulbs or the wall colour, the second obviously won’t be happening for a bit yet.
If you purchased and supplied the fabric did they return any offcuts? If so you could use that for cushions for other chairs. Or as part of a cushion with more than one fabric.
Find something, poster maybe, that incorporates the green with other colours and hang it above the sofa.

I can’t refund it because it’s had this bespoke fabric and it was a three seater that we asked to be made into a two seater - so it’s all handmade. Are they meant to feel so much firmer when they’re brand-new? Is it like breaking in leather shoes? I just wish I’d gone for something neutral. It’s a grass green colour.

we had new sofas before Christmas and I just hated how firm they were. They are foam inserts. I found them really uncomfortable and regretted buying them but now they are softening in nicely and much more comfy so dont panic and give it some time.

If it's really very different from the one you tried in the shop I think you'd possibly have grounds to ask for a refund. They should be ensuring the ones in the showroom are a proper representation.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · Yesterday 15:45

Two things.
Sitting on a feather cushion right now would still smart so try to bear that in mind.
Newborn babies are very pukey. Get your husband to go to B&Q or similar and get a huge beige/cream throw and just cover it up for now. Come back to it when you are feeling less frazzled.

But take lots of pictures in good light first and show us because it sounds gorgeous. It might be simpler to reupholster the pink chair to tone with it rather than have such a strong contrast but depends on the walls, flooring etc. You'll get some good advice and chat gbt or similar is useful for immediate visuals that you can amuse yourself with while you feed for hours, and hours and hours.
