New sofa arrived. Massive buyers remorse. Can anyone relate?

Hi, I’m literally 6 days postpartum and very fragile so I could be irrational. Our new sofa arrived yesterday after a 10 week wait. It’s in a bespoke fabric which I chose and supplied. I feel quite shocked at how much I don’t like it. Firstly, it is so much harder than the one that we tried in the shop over three visits. I assume this is just because it’s new? It has foam cushions with a light feather layer. And the colour is so much more shocking now that I’ve seen it in our living room. I pored over fabric samples but now it’s on a bigger surface area it just looks bright and shocking. It also no longer goes with any of the other accessories in our living room and just doesn’t look very holistic because it’s such an opinionated colour.

I just don’t know what to do. It cost me £2000 and I thought I would feel excited. Do I try to get it reupholstered? Do I just live with it for a few weeks? What do I do? I feel so low.

I bought a Grass Green sofa once too. Years ago when I was newly divorced and menopausal, and moving into a new home. I cried when it was delivered because it was too big, too bright, and didn’t look like mine, and the seat cushions were hard. I went out and bought cushions in every shape and shade of green, some floral ones, a green stripy throw, and a green teddy to sit in the corner. It looked like a crazy green fabric garden, and made me smile every morning.
Years later, I’m downsizing to a tiny flat, and all my furniture is being given away except my green sofa. I will probably cry again when it finally wears out.
New mums are new people, OP. Be gentle with yourself, give your lovely new sofa a chance, and enjoy that baby. It’s ok.

Lovely kind post 💕

And it’s all true, OP! We’ve all made horrendous mistakes in life… at least a sofa isn’t forever!

I’ll add my beautiful “terracotta” ( in my head) 3+2 sofas to the story… they were so “orange” I actually wept and was convinced they’d sent me the wrong ones! They hadn’t… it was the lighting and space in the shop that fooled me. I did grow to like them, just re-dressed the room to suit and enjoyed them in the end.

It’ll all be ok, Congrats on your new baby 🌸

I pretty much always hate my sofas. I have had massive buyer's remorse with one - it was huge and brown and ugly and I tried to sell it but you can't sell them on without a big loss. They do soften, and you do get used to them, and cushions and rugs make a big difference.

I’ll post a picture in the morning because in late afternoon lights my camera doesn’t pick up on how bright it is. Check back? It’s basically the colour of the leaves of the house plants. But it’s next to our existing pink armchair which I just think looks silly? And I’m worried about the firmness of it all. I just don’t know how long they take to feel soft. My tailbone is killing me after hours of sitting. Just don’t trust myself in interior decisions. Now I’m crying again!

Pink and green usually work well together. Esp as colour pops in the room. Will be interesting to see the picture and then I’m sure people will have lots of ideas on how to style the room to better suit it, if it doesn’t look right

CopeNorth · Yesterday 13:44

Can you tone down its impact with some more neutral scatter cushions / blanket over the arm?

There’s absolutely no point uploading photos, because everyone is going to blow smoke up your arse and tell you it’s lovely even if they hate it.

You need to live with it for a while and think about changing other aspects of the room if you think they don’t go, and take it from there. Does your husband love it?

I won't! Promise!😂

Yes, I've had two sofas that I hated once they were in the house.

One just took over the room, (but I got used to it actually; it had just been more open before) and the other, like yours, op, looked different when the fabric swatch was "en masse." Strangely enough I had predicted this and chose a tone down to allow for it - but it wasn't enough.

2026Y · Yesterday 13:48

I think you should talk to them about the difference in feel vs the one in the shop. I don't thin kit should be significantly different and they may be able to change the filling or swap to other foam inserts.

Calliopespa · Yesterday 13:49

Sofa will loosen with use. There are all sorts of crude analogies I could make but I won't - especially as you've just had a baby.

Ontheedge123 · Yesterday 13:52

Check with the shop. You might get some money back if it’s unusable (for you). We got our 3 piece suite from a warehouse at the back of our local DFS which was all bespoke returns from people in your situation. Ours was bright yellow leather so I can see why the original buyer balked but I work better with limited choices and seeing what I’m going to get so win win!

JulietteHasAGun · Yesterday 13:54

I have a bright green sofa and pink walls. Love that colour combo.

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · Yesterday 13:56

The colour doesn’t sound obnoxious. Try avcessoriang with some cushions and lamps. Could you change the paint and curtains in the room? That would be cheaper than a new sofa. It will definitely soften over time.

I have forest green sofas against hot pink walls and a green and pink tropical wallpaper, I think yours sounds lovely!

Kindly, you need to get a grip OP. Crying over a sofa? Really?

OP has a new baby, and even if she hadn’t there’s no need to be unpleasant.

Goldfsh · Yesterday 14:02

I think it's normal. Buying a sofa is up there with getting a divorce in terms of stress. It takes a while to get used to it!!

There was nothing kind about that now, was there. Do better.

My babies are middle aged and I'd still shed a few tears.

Fooledaroundandfellinlove · Yesterday 14:09

I’d live with it for a while. Your hormones will be all over the place at the moment. See if it softens. If not, and you can afford, get it reupholstered with new seat cushions.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · Yesterday 14:09

You’ll adjust. It will be fine.

"Kindly" Hmm

I think it's perfectly reasonable to cry after spending £2000 on something that you (a) dislike and (b) can't return.

Tryagain26 · Yesterday 14:12

Just wait for a while.
If it is very different from what you had it will take a while to get used to.
But even if you are convinced you can never get used to it don't get it reupholstered with a new baby. babies and toddlers are very messy!
Better to get a throw

Gemstar3 · Yesterday 14:15

Awww OP I do get it; I’ve cried over many a new furniture purchase! We now have a new rule in our family that we have to live with something new for 2 weeks before we say what we think of it…experience has taught us that we usually hate it at first simply because it jars because it wasn’t there before. Give it 2 weeks before you do anything…if you still hate it then, I agree with PPs, go for throws and scatter cushions.

FruAashild · Yesterday 14:18

The cushions will soften.
Your bum hurts because you gave birth a week ago.
You are in the middle of the baby blues, so don't make any decisions about the sofa.
Grass green is a gorgeous colour and goes with pink, I bet it's the wall colour that's off now and that is much cheaper to sort out. What colour is it? If you like neutrals a white with a tint if pink or green (or deeper versions of those colours if that's your vibe) will bring things together again.

Kidsrold · Yesterday 14:19

I can’t imagine a green sofa that I wouldn’t like OP. When you get a chance do post a picture. I know exactly what you mean. I hated the colour of my office when it was first done. I do love it now though. Really love it. It was just the change.
