New sofa arrived. Massive buyers remorse. Can anyone relate?

Hi, I’m literally 6 days postpartum and very fragile so I could be irrational. Our new sofa arrived yesterday after a 10 week wait. It’s in a bespoke fabric which I chose and supplied. I feel quite shocked at how much I don’t like it. Firstly, it is so much harder than the one that we tried in the shop over three visits. I assume this is just because it’s new? It has foam cushions with a light feather layer. And the colour is so much more shocking now that I’ve seen it in our living room. I pored over fabric samples but now it’s on a bigger surface area it just looks bright and shocking. It also no longer goes with any of the other accessories in our living room and just doesn’t look very holistic because it’s such an opinionated colour.

I just don’t know what to do. It cost me £2000 and I thought I would feel excited. Do I try to get it reupholstered? Do I just live with it for a few weeks? What do I do? I feel so low.

Put a couple of neutral throws over it and live with it for a while- it seems mad you chose and supplied the fabric, but don't like TBH, hormones could be contributing.

CheeseyOnionPie · 22/04/2026 21:22

Don’t worry about it at all. It’s definitely firmer than the one in the showroom because it’s new and it needs a bit of sitting on to get comfy.

As for the colour, give it a chance, it will look less WOW once you’re used to it and the fabric has worn in a bit. Don’t put pressure on yourself. If you hate it in a few months time just sell it and get some money back.

Congratulations on your baby!

Its not mad at all because (and OP may in fact love it in the end), its often impossible to tell what big purchases are actually going to look like because the swatches or ways of looking at what an item might look like are miniscule

We found this with kitchen worktops, with carpet swatches, flooring swatches, choosing a front door recently has been fraught with decisions and apparently there are too many options to choose from so they dont have samples. Just a brochure. Im spending 5k on a door but cant actually see what its going to look like.

Dizzydrizzy · 22/04/2026 22:22

It’ll soften a bit but shouldn’t be so hard it hurts your coccyx.

fouroclockrock · 22/04/2026 22:34

Pink and green are the best. I almost went for grass green velvet but ended up choosing a salmon pink instead. Would love to see a picture.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/04/2026 22:41

Sure it’s not that bad

you loved it in the store

but if really hate it then easily covered with a huge blanket /throw

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/04/2026 22:42

I think it sounds lovely

lulubalu · 22/04/2026 22:51

I can absolutely relate, we bought a massive corner sofa with matching two seat and when it arrived the colour was sooo different from what I expected - we'd taken home samples to look in different lights in our room but OMG when the full size articles arrived....<shocked face>
good news is, we did adjust to it, made a few tweaks to cushions and throws and it lasted us around 15 long happy years!
btw I love this line from your OP "just doesn’t look very holistic because it’s such an opinionated colour "

CalliopeFosterBeauchamp · 22/04/2026 22:55

I love love LOVE grass green. I have major sofa envy, OP.

I have a red sofa, a pink armchair and blue
curtains. Lots of bright clashing accessories - orange cushions, copper lamp, lots of coloured glass. I love my living room - it reflects my personality and is my safe space.

You chose this colour, so on some level it reflects you. Embrace it! Do some browsing and find rooms with green sofas that you like, and use them as inspiration.

And don’t let this taint your first weeks with your lovely baby xx

LaurenBacal · 22/04/2026 23:03

I’m really excited about seeing the photo! It sounds lovely and I’m sure you’ll grow to love it!

I guess some people find it easier to choose and envisage than others then. As the OP said she supplied the fabric I don't think tiny swatches are to blame.

MauriceTheMussel · 22/04/2026 17:34

Chuck a blanket/throw over it and be liberal with scatter cushions?

This is what I did with the sofa of my dreams, that was gorgeous in the shop and turned out to look appalling in my actual house.

AllTheChaos · 22/04/2026 23:21

BTW grass green and varying shades of pink look gorgeous together, so I am sure once you get used to it you will love it

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 22/04/2026 23:31

Floral cushions that contain greens and pinks, on both the chair and the sofa, will tie the two together.

It will soften up.

wand3rer · 22/04/2026 23:37

When our green sofa arrived, it also felt very wrong!

See if something in the room is clashing with it 🤔

In our case, it was a yellow cushion. The cushion made the sofa look greener and the sofa made the cushion look yellower. In an ugly "The Mask" way 😵

patooties · 22/04/2026 23:39

My kitchen is pink and green - as is my bedroom - and my bathroom actually (all different greens and all different pinks) I think it’s a classic combo clearly!
everyone likes my house (or says they do) you can funky it up but for the meantime- recover from your birth, enjoy your baby (congrats!) you have a lot of new things to get used to - the baby is the most important one!

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 22/04/2026 23:40

I love pink and green together! Sounds like you need to just tie the colours together. Pink cushions on the couch. Green and pink throw on a chair?

Yep, need a photo.

Malinia · 22/04/2026 23:41

We just had new green sofas delivered and ours are hard too when the ones in the shop were so comfy. We've had them a few weeks now and they are softening up, plus I've bought new cushions. You'll get used to it OP, I bet it's lovely.

ComedyGuns · 22/04/2026 23:49

You could always sell it on EBay if, after say two weeks, you still hate it.

A friend of ours acquired a fantastic brand new L-shaped sofa a few years ago on e-bay, that was custom made but the buyer didn’t like it in their home.

sellotape12 · 22/04/2026 17:44

I’ll post a picture in the morning because in late afternoon lights my camera doesn’t pick up on how bright it is. Check back? It’s basically the colour of the leaves of the house plants. But it’s next to our existing pink armchair which I just think looks silly? And I’m worried about the firmness of it all. I just don’t know how long they take to feel soft. My tailbone is killing me after hours of sitting. Just don’t trust myself in interior decisions. Now I’m crying again!

That sounds lovely though x

IsItTheBlackOneOrTheRedOne · 22/04/2026 23:57

Oh sorry didn’t read to the end. Tailbone not so lovely! 😭

Theresa0955 · Yesterday 00:00

I bought a Grass Green sofa once too. Years ago when I was newly divorced and menopausal, and moving into a new home. I cried when it was delivered because it was too big, too bright, and didn’t look like mine, and the seat cushions were hard. I went out and bought cushions in every shape and shade of green, some floral ones, a green stripy throw, and a green teddy to sit in the corner. It looked like a crazy green fabric garden, and made me smile every morning.
Years later, I’m downsizing to a tiny flat, and all my furniture is being given away except my green sofa. I will probably cry again when it finally wears out.
New mums are new people, OP. Be gentle with yourself, give your lovely new sofa a chance, and enjoy that baby. It’s ok.

Happyjoe · Yesterday 00:01

Sounds nice! I do love a green sofa. I bet you'll learn to love it, if not a throw and cushions may help.
My old sofa was tired and I've never had a truly lovely one before so I spent over £3k for a purple one, a Saxon velvet chesterfield, very well made, beautiful and.... as hard as rock sitting on it. Wasn't given the option of density when ordering. I can't sit on it and it gave my other half sciatica and hasn't become any softer after a year! It's in storage now. Such is the life of sofa ordering these days and I totally regret it too but I hope you enjoy yours. Either rock hard or cushions so soft they don't spring back.

Sensiblesal · Yesterday 00:19

No sofa advice but get yourself a donut ring cushion to sit on for a few weeks. Save your tailbone from getting sore! That might be a combo of the childbirth & sofa not just the sofa being hard.

give yourself a break too you have just had a baby and a million emotions & hormones running rampant in your body right now
