Question about hot water cylinder/immersion/very hot water

Can anyone help please?

I noticed that the hot water has been coming out of the taps extremely hot for the last few days. On investigation yesterday, I noticed that the electric immersion heater switch next to our hot water cylinder had accidentally got switched on. I switched it off yesterday lunchtime around 30 hours ago.

The hot water cylinder is heated by a gas boiler which comes on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. This has always been fine and the water has been a suitable temperature.

I’m trying to understand how the system works because the hot water is till incredibly hot today, even after I switched the electric immersion off.

The gas boiler has continued to heat the cylinder as normal during this time.

Question is, is the hot water still extremely hot from having being heated by two systems until yesterday? If so, do I just use all of the hot water in the tank to get rid of it and start again when it’s heated by the gas boiler in the morning?

would this resolve the issue?

The emersion heater should switch off when it hits a certain temperature. Do you know what it is set to? Is it possible that the thermostat for the emmersion is broken? You could test this by changing the temp and seeing if it makes any difference to the water temp.
