How much space do you need to comfortably iron with an ironing board?

Planning a new utility room at the moment, and I’d like to be able to iron in the utility room itself. I know that many people don’t iron at all, but I do. I iron bedding, jeans, trousers, shirts, loads of things.

Obviously I need to allow for the width and length of the board itself, and make sure that there’s a plug to the right of the board (I’m right handed), but how much room do you think I should allow for around the board when it’s upright?

I iron in the bay window of my bedroom so there's about 4 feet (120cms for the youngsters) of space. Items piled on the bed behind me then hung on the wardrobe handles/radiator to air for a bit before putting away.
It's comfortable but don't think it would be with a solid wall behind and in front of me. I enjoy ironing and I like doing it there where I can watch the world go by (can you tell I'm retired) but if you just crack on and do it quickly the outlook wont bother you too much.

I used to iron in a tiny utility room. Was just wide enough to have a brabantia ironing board set up width ways with maybe 30cm each end. And had about half a meter in front before it hit the wall. Can make it work in any space

Enough space for the board and for me to stand while ironing plus space for the ironed things. I do it in the living room.

Great, thank you. Forgot about including some space to hang up whatever I’m ironing and a basket for folded things. And somewhere to put the basket of things that I’m ironing and somewhere hangers!

I iron in the kitchen which is right next to the utility room so I can watch TV while I do it, if I ironed in the utility room anything like bed sheets would probably end up in the cat bowls!
We have a decent sized utility and I have ironed in there on occasion but I do find it a squeeze, we probably have actual floor space next to the units of 2x1.25m.

Why don't you try ironing while backed into a corner giving yourself the amount of space you are considering. Either against a wall or next to a counter top, whichever it would be in your planned space. Do a full ironing session, not just a quick shirt. Think about where you would put the basket and the ironed clothes. See if it is doable for you.

This is very good advice, I shall!

I currently manage on one of those tiny IKEA ironing boards that sits on the dining table 😆

My dream utility room (that I will never have) would have space for a full sized ironing board that would fold down from the wall 😍
