ok its a pretty open brief but i am getting fed up living in a small house that seems to cost a lot. Will we get anything more for our money or is just as expensive that near to london?

Osterley is on Picaddilly linie so v v convenient to Covent Garden, not sure about Docklands.

ISleworth/Osterley are both quite reasonably priced areas and quite nice - I lived in Isleworth for years and have freinds who still live there.

Its a bargain compared to most places in London and still walking distance to Thames for nice walks.

St Albans is lovely Newgirl - and you should be able to afford it with 500k. What type/size of house are you looking for?

you'll be lucky! Semi detached possibly but will trade off nicer street house, klots of houses in Isleworth ahve decent sized gardens. Search in findaproperty under TW7

purpleflower · 19/06/2008 14:54

this is very nice

jelliebelly · 19/06/2008 14:54

St Albans is nice but the wrong side of London for covent garden/canary wharf - trains from St Albans come into St Pancras - I reckon it could take the best part of an hour to get across town

artichokes · 19/06/2008 14:56

Guildford, period, semi

artichokes · 19/06/2008 14:57

Lewes (nr Brighton) is gorgeous

twelveyeargap · 19/06/2008 14:57

You can get much closer to central London and still get something for that money. This is in a pretty nice part of Bounds Green, N11

Access to Moorgate on the overland train from Bowes Park and within walking distance of the Picadilly Line.

Secondary schools possibly an "issue", but the primaries are good afaik.

Kewcumber · 19/06/2008 14:58

under offer and no tube but large

CountessDracula · 19/06/2008 14:58

period with large gdn

CountessDracula · 19/06/2008 14:59

T. WElls great for Canary Wharf and Cov Gdn as the train stops at London Bridge, Waterloo East and Charing X

LadyThompson · 19/06/2008 15:00

You should be looking in lovely Oxfordshire, my girl! An hour to Oxford on the train, and an hour and ten to Charlbury which is nearly in the Cotswolds! Direct train from Paddington. Gardens and period houses a go go.

A 3 - 4 bed detached in East Surrey/West Sussex/Kent border

laidbackinengland · 19/06/2008 15:04

How about this ? www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-10257096.rsp?pa_n=3&tr_t=buy

ecoworrier · 19/06/2008 18:32

Stretch your journey to one hour and a quarter by train and you could get a 4-5 bed detached in Wiltshire:

like this or this one

Soapbox · 19/06/2008 18:48

chislehurst?

Very green, 20mins to London Bridge, 25 to Waterloo East (then tube to Canary Wharf), very good primary schools and plenty of good secondaries including many grammar choices.

It has a nice feel to the High Street - not many chains mostly little boutique places.

Soapbox · 19/06/2008 18:49

Sorry link didn't work - Postcode is BR7 for Rightmove search.

MissingMyHeels · 19/06/2008 19:10

Come to Surrey Esher, Epsom with some decoration, brand new Epsom or 5 bedrooms in Tadworth?

This part of Surrey is great value and trains to London in well under 45mins (Epsom is about 35mins), easy to city as trains to Waterloo for W&C Line and Vauxhall for Vic line to West End. Linked houses are a bit more than 500k but think given market in area you could get them for 500k.

blueshoes · 19/06/2008 19:32

If you need to get into Canary Wharf and Covent Garden, Greenwich will be perfect. You can take the DLR direct into Canary Wharf and the mainline train direct into Charing Cross . You also have the option of the tube to Canary Wharf (one stop away) but you probably have to take a bus to the tube station.

Depending on how close you are to Greenwich town centre, you are looking at a 2-3 bed terraced house. So probably not great.

bumbling · 19/06/2008 19:35

Wherever you go you'll get a lot more in a year's time given the current climate. Some reckon in a year we could be looking at a 20 per cent drop from the peak of the property market. Have you considered selling and renting and waiting it out. Good way to try a new area?

swedishmum · 19/06/2008 23:33

You can have my house if you like! We're in a hamlet outside Ashford and we're level 1 (or whatever's top) on upmystreet.com. Our 20 yo house is worth about 500k - we have 3 receps, 3 baths, 5 beds with a totally open countryside outlook back and front. Local primary schools are fab - 70% of dd's class passed 11 plus last year, 60% this year (weaker year). Four miles from the beach. Crap for good shops and culture though.

swedishmum · 19/06/2008 23:35

I'd love to move back to Chislehurst - lived in Bickley before the sticks and loved it.

BigGitDad · 20/06/2008 10:48

I grew up in Bickley and still live very near to there now. It is lovely but you will not get alot of your money whereas around Ashford you would get alot more.
