I'm about to do our house and contents insurance. We'll be doing a loft conversion in the summer, is there anything I need to consider?

Just that really.

Do I need to increase the accidental damage insurance or will that be covered by the building firm doing the loft conversion (who are quite reputable).

Obviously I will tell the insurance company before the work starts.

Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks

Insure as is now then call before works start to inform them.

Yes, insure as is as you presumably won't know start/end dates yet then let them know when you have firmer dates and contract value. The builder will sometimes cover the works for both of you, but you'd still need to cover the existing building and contents. You may have to move to a specialist policy for that, but worry about that closer to the time. It might be worth getting a quote from another company before you do notify your current insurer though, it's not unheard that they refuse to cover - that happened to me, and it was a bit of a mad dash to find an alternative.

If one of the questions asked is - do you have any planned building works - say yes. Answer the questions honestly.

Your insurance may be invalid during works so you need to tell them nearer the time. but they would normally refund you if they have to cancel your policy. Then you would need a different product called “renovation insurance “

We didn't find any standard house insurance prepared to insure during building works and had to choose specialist cover

I’d go to a broker - Alan Boswell Ltd- are good and I’d tell them and let them suggest …
