We moved house in the summer, ordered new carpets & wooden flooring plus fitting from a reputable local company. All were really expensive (to us at least). We were told 4 days to fit 2 normal-sized rooms with the wooden flooring. One man turned up to fit the wooden floor, said he was a specialist, that he couldn't work on Thursday as he had bad knees and needed to go to the hospital, and that he would finish on Friday - we said no problem. It was my son's birthday at the weekend, and we'd arranged a family gathering to see the new house and celebrate. We had some plumbing issues and had a plumber on site, too. The plumber took the floor-standing radiators off in the rooms where the wooden floor was going, so that the flooring could go there. The installation man was very slow, wouldn't let us use one room while he worked in the other, as he had to do both simultaneously. He spent hours on the phone and sat in his van, on the third day the carpet fitters turned up - he knew them and spent hours talking to them, the job overran and we couldn't use either room at the weekend, so cancelled the family gathering, we also cancelled the cleaners as all furniture from the two rooms (sofas tvs coffe tables etc) was in the kitchen/diner. The plumber had finished the job he was doing for us. The wooden fitting was completed the following Wednesday, and we received the bill; however, the fitter had mucked up a couple of areas, and we refused to pay until they were completed (they'd had 50% of the bill). We then moved into one of the bedrooms, the carpets had been fitted in, and there was glue on the carpet (it was a large room and had a join that glue was used on). We’d paid all the fees for the carpet, so we asked them to come and inspect it when they completed the wooden floor. The wooden floor was finished, and we had to pay a plumber to reinstall the radiators. The same flooring fitter inspected the glue on the carpet and said he thought it was a burn - it isn’t, we asked someone else to inspect from the firm and then received a bill from a money recovery firm with 2K added on to the bill for their services (even though we had to wait weeks and weeks to get the job finished) - we told the recovery firm what had happened and he liasied with the manager to get someone to inspect - the shop manager came out and said it was hair straighteners - it isn’t as I don’t have any and the room didn’t actually have electricity in it when we moved in. The manager missed several apts to come and inspect.
We have spoken to a flooring specialist to come and inspect, and he is due later this month (his job is to inspect flooring). The carpet firm is refusing to send anyone and saying they don’t acknowledge this man inspecting, as they haven’t chosen him.
Since then, we’ve had radiators fitted in that room, and one of them has leaked, damaging the flooring. The plumbing firm is coming to inspect.
What would you do now?
