i’m hoping to do a kitchen refit, as mine is over 40 years old! Looking at Howdens kitchen and AEG double oven and induction hob.
If any one here has an induction hob what are your views on it?

My Gaggenau has a detachable magnetic knob (so it can be stored away when not in use leaving an entirely flat surface). It’s brilliant.

I had a gaggenau with a knob in our last house and it was great. I wanted a range in this one because I wanted something with a massive oven, so had different choices, but am lusting after this setup. Sigh.

The Essential Induction | Gaggenau

The Essential Induction is a first for Gaggenau – a cooktop and worktop combined into one.

We're discussing this at the minute because the kitchen is in need of some repairs.

I worry I'd miss the ability to char vegetables, particularly aubergines, which I do a lot. That's why I've resisted the swap to induction. I also hate touch controls because my hands are often too cold, or wet, or covered in dough or whatever. I find it a faff when using the washer and dryer because they don't respond as well as a dial does.

I have one of these, next to my range, which I end up using mostly for that.

There are also quite a few mixed hobs around, with some induction and some gas.

Lol. I hadn't noticed that. Very generous of them, so get it while it lasts. It is a lovely piece of cooking equipment though.

No gas in the village, I have a ceramic hob and like being able to switch off and know the residual heat will carry on cooking whatever’s in the pan. The lack of heat may be appealing to those with children. I dislike DD’s induction hob, for all the reasons already listed by non-fans.

I really, really dislike DD’s Howdens kitchen though. Awful quality and finish, drawers all broken within a couple of years, integrated fridge right beside the oven, freezer ices up constantly and drawers all broke, cupboards and high shelves right up to the ceiling so they’re impossible to reach, really sharp edge around the quartz worktop cut-out for the butler sink… cupboard doors have dropped, it all just looks cheap and shoddy - and it wasn’t cheap.

Yes definitely ! Very quick and easy to clean.

OhDear111 · 07/01/2026 00:04

@YourWinter An induction does that! You just leave it on a low setting! Mine just keeps things warm on 1 or 2. As I said, get a decent induction hob and it’s wonderful. Ceramic is slow slow slow. Waiting for them is annoying after you have had induction. We’ve no gas here either and I’m not going back to ceramic. It’s very dated. Gas - no thanks.

I thought exactly the same!! An induction hob can do everything a ceramic one can but much better!

I agree with @YourWinter’s point about Howdens kitchens in general though - I wouldn’t buy one as I think the quality is poor and I don’t like their style or finish. But a decent quality kitchen and good induction hob- can’t beat it.

I hate induction hobs so much - I don't have one but I have to cook on ones in other houses regularly and they are horrible if you do actual cookery. If all you do is warm up preprepared stuff they are probably fine. The touch-sensitive controls on an induction hob can only be operated by someone with clean dry hands. When I am cooking I sometimes do things that gets food on my hands, or if I wash them they may not dry too quickly. The controls also stop working properly if your pans spit or bubble over at any point. If you have several pans crowded onto the hob as you are cooking a complex meal, and the edge of a pan crosses over onto the control area, EVERYTHING switches off and all your saucepans cool down if you don't notice it happening.

Highly recommended if you don't like cooking much and just want sleek lines in your beautiful home spaces. Possibly ok if you are an unimaginitive and highly-controlled cook and never finds youtself juggling slightly too many simultaneous tasks when preparing a meal.

That’s down to the brand/model, none of this is true of my hob. I don’t warm up anything preprepared and cook everything from scratch, mostly doing two meals at the same time to have food to take for lunch. Gas was fine for me but I wouldn’t go back because the lowest setting is much warmer than a 1 or 2 on induction and I use that all the time.

OhDear111 · 07/01/2026 08:24

@APatternGrammarI don’t get the notion that you don’t cook from scratch on an induction hob. This poster doesn’t even have one! This is usually the case when people are anti or they have one with the low supply. For a cook who wants space on the hob, look for a wide hob. Mine is 900 wide and occasionally it’s turned off when something has boiled over but when I’m doing a full on meal I do notice and it buzzes at me. I’ve never turned it off by mistake with a pan moved onto the control area.

It’s so easy to clean. But mine is always beeping at me and I don’t know why 😂
