Induction hob, yes or no?

ForNoisyCat · 26/12/2025 08:52

i’m hoping to do a kitchen refit, as mine is over 40 years old! Looking at Howdens kitchen and AEG double oven and induction hob.
If any one here has an induction hob what are your views on it?

We recently renovated and got one for the first time. Previously, I've had electric rings, ceramic and gas briefly whilst living in a caravan and renovating. Some thoughts:

-We did consider a split hob which is 1/2 induction on on side and 1/2 gas, but went with 100% induction in the end
-Some of my cooking pots/pans don't work on the induction hob- only a couple. I believe you can test my putting a magnet on the base and if its stuck solid, it will work. If the magnet can be pull off easily, it likely won't.
-It love that it heats up very quickly.

-I was under the impression that when the pan is moved off the hotplate, then the hotplate remains stone cold. Its actually hot, but not hot enough to burn you like ceramic would be
-We went with Miele. They have a factory outlet with stock which changes daily and if you have a bluelight card and ring them, you get 20% off their regular stock..

I love my induction hob. I've had an electric hob (not a fan), gas (great, but hated cleaning it) but induction is my favourite.

I made a promise to myself a few years ago that I would only make life easier for myself from here on…not cleaning a gas cooker was one of the first things I wanted to do. I hated hated hated it!!

Thank you all for your replies, these are really helpful. I’ll look into the specs of the AEG iand check if hard wired, amperage etc. thanks again l!

Not for us, as DH has a pacemaker! We are sticking to a gas hob. Otherwise, I'd have to do All the cooking, and I already do 90%!

I hate mine. It is a Neff.

If steam rolls down the pan and makes it wet, it switches itself off. Give it a quick wipe and it switches itself off. Move a hot pan and accidentally touch one of the finger-controls and it switches itself off.

It is also black and shiny so takes a lot of buffing up to make it look nice (unlike my old white enamel cooker which just needed a wipe).

Yep.

AEG is shit. We got one because it was cheaper and I wasn’t 100% sure about induction. Now I’m 100% sure I don’t want induction. Im glad I got a relatively cheap one but then that might have been part of the trouble.

Mind you a pp has a Neff induction and complains of all the things that drove me mad about my AEG.

Compared to Neff/Bosch/Smeg and Miele - AEG is noticeably poor quality.

Now I have a Neff gas 6 burner and am so much happier.

Wrenjay · 26/12/2025 21:49

Get the highest rated induction hob. Test your existing pans with a fridge magnet before buying new. Pre set heat settings plus anti boil settings are really good. No dirty simmering/boiling, so much cleaner kitchen plus safer to use.

IMPORTANT DOWNSIDE: If anyone has a pacemaker do NOT have induction as it is an electro-magnetic fuel and will interfere with heart pacemaker and is dangerous.

My ex has one in his new house. Its bloody awful, fiddly, annoying and nowhere near as good as gas. He had to spend money on new pots and pans as well.

Must have been an underpowered (cheap) one. Wrong about pans: test with a magnet (even a fridge one)

landlordhell · 26/12/2025 21:59

I have a 6 year old Howden’s induction- the large one. It’s been great. The main thing I like is the extra worktop space as I can chop on it et . Plus I love how easy it is to clean. I do miss the immediacy of gas especially when frying.

This. Didn’t have to change pans.

No no no no no

much slower to warm up than gas so drying etc takes ages

the one I cooked on for Christmas (Airbnb) was very power limited so once you had two hobs on the max power for each was very limited.

Must have been faulty or power supply issue they are so so fast. A pan of water on the hob boils faster than a kettle. Way faster than a gas hob, I'd never go back to gas now.

Wrenjay · 26/12/2025 22:01

Not a good choice: ours is cheaper to run than gas as it only heats the bottom of the pan no matter what size, stir fry pans spot on, we can set the correct temperature for simmering. Ours is an AEG top of range, hard wired to electric cable. Bluetooth enabled. What's not to love?

chipshopElvis · 26/12/2025 22:02

Yes! Absolutely brilliant much better than gas.

DappledThings · 26/12/2025 22:06

My parents have one and I hate it. Pain in the arse to get to a steady temperature for anything other than boiling stuff. Gets the arse and switches itself off of you spill anything or move a pan too quickly or breath too close to it.

Would never have one. They only do because there's no gas supply to their village.

The solution to this is getting a good one. My mum’s is crap but that’s because it was cheap.

Drivinghomeforchristmas25 · 26/12/2025 10:11

Yes, but you have to get a decent one. I have one with actual knobs (not the touch ones) and a decent power supply. All 5 rings run simultaneously, it heats up instantly and cleans in about 30 seconds. I despise gas hobs!

What make and model has knobs?

I am Not sure what you mean by “drying” but proper induction jobs are very quick. I would think that the one you used was either not induction or had not been properly installed.

LuckyCharmz · 26/12/2025 22:25

Love mine. It’s a seimens and about 13 years old, hard wired in. Heats up v quickly, so easy to keep clean, still looks fabulous and I’d never have anything else.

i fear yours may be broken/being used incorrectly

CrikeyMajikey · 26/12/2025 22:39

I’m on my 2nd in 18 years. They’re brilliant, very quick to respond and I’ve never actually managed to badly burn a saucepan. So easy to keep clean too.

billiongulls · 26/12/2025 22:52

Love love love my induction hob. Easy to clean, and really controllable - what's not to like?

Aimtodobetter · 26/12/2025 22:54

I love mine - way better than electric, and not hot to touch in the same way as electric or gas so safer around kids. You have to be thoughtful about pan size but otherwise brilliant.

Gemz1010g · 26/12/2025 22:57

Check your pans are compatible with induction or be prepared to buy new

FollowSpot · 28/12/2025 10:09

Get a high quality / high spec one.

My only issue is that my basic one is hopeless for stir fries as it goes off when you remove the pan momentarily from the heat. And you can’t get the effect of a gas flame up the side of the wok
