Induction hob, yes or no?

i’m hoping to do a kitchen refit, as mine is over 40 years old! Looking at Howdens kitchen and AEG double oven and induction hob.
If any one here has an induction hob what are your views on it?

I had three pans going yesterday and it was definitely power limiting them. One pan was fine on 9, I added another pan and the max it would let me do was 6,6 and then I tried to stir fry the sprouts and pancetta bd all three dropped to 3,3,3

but maybe it’s broke or power limited.

get slightly irritated that if a pan boils over it just shuts itself down

our pans were fine but Mil had to replace her entire pans collection when she got one

I inherited one on moving to a new house and was instantly in love. So easy to clean, never realised how much I hated taking the old gas hob apart to clean! Had to ditch one aluminium steamer, but all my steel pans worked fine, and I've used it as an excuse to aquire some cast iron casseroles.

I have just changed to an induction hob from gas. I love it, it’s extremely quick to get hot so it’s not slow at all. It is also a plug in one and have no issue with multiple rings on at once at max.

The difference in cleaning is the biggest thing for me. A quick wipe down and that’s it done.

I love my induction hob, quick to heat up, easy to clean, wouldn't go back to gas now

Love, love, love mine. But they are very power hungry so you may need extra electrical work doing. We did, but it was so worth it.

much slower to warm up than gas so drying etc takes ages

the one I cooked on for Christmas (Airbnb) was very power limited so once you had two hobs on the max power for each was very limited.

I expect it had been de-rated so it could run on a 13Amp plug instead of a dedicated cooker curcuit. They can (usually?) be adjusted so that total current draw is limited when you use multiple elements.

A dedicated cooker circuit is usually rated at 32Amps. Sometimes more if you are planning a huge range cooker.

It may have been a landlord special, but ours was horrific. It was so hard to control - the buttons needed completely dry hands and surface to work, it beeped at you if you lifted a pan briefly, didn't have the pan perfectly central, left something anywhere on the hob, and had 2 powers - ferocious and crap. I cursed it daily.

It’s so easy to clean. But mine is always beeping at me and I don’t know why 😂

Changed to induction as I thought it would be easier to clean. It is. But I can’t stand it, so going back to gas.

  • You go away and leave something simmering, come back and it’s switched itself off.
  • Every time you get a bit of water on the top all rings switch off automatically.
  • You can’t really stir fry (and other techniques) properly as you can’t hold the pan above the heat where you want it. You just have to keep twiddling the temperature control instead.

That is far more annoying than periodically having to put the gas hob grates in the dishwasher.

Sounds like a ceramic not an induction. We switched to induction from gas a few years ago. Would never go back to gas. Ours is hardwired.

This sounds like an electric ceramic hob, not an induction hob which is super-quick.

We just switched from gas to induction as part of our refit, OP - reluctantly for environmental reasons but actually it is so much quicker and more efficient than gas and I would never go back!

I went from gas to AEG induction and wouldn’t go back. My mum has the howdens own brand and it’s not as good - turns off with one tiny splatter of water and beeps at her for random like it’s telling her off a lot.

Have had an induction hob for about fifteen years now, still love it.

We do have a gas wok burner too - we did stir-fry a lot when we had the kitchen done, but I barely use that now. Still a good idea though we do get the occasional power cut so the burner means we always have cooking facilities regardless.

but maybe it’s broke or power limited.

This will be something to do with the wiring of the house, not the hob itself.

I would never go back to any other sort of hob. Induction are easy to cook on and to keep clean. Most saucepans these days are induction compatible.

Hated mine and couldn't wait to get the gas back in.

I hate mine. It is a Neff.

If steam rolls down the pan and makes it wet, it switches itself off. Give it a quick wipe and it switches itself off. Move a hot pan and accidentally touch one of the finger-controls and it switches itself off.

It is also black and shiny so takes a lot of buffing up to make it look nice (unlike my old white enamel cooker which just needed a wipe).

Have you tried an induction hob? We’re saving for a new kitchen and we will put an induction hob in. We used them in one Airbnb and we bought the portable one from IKEA. Both of these confirmed to us that we will go for induction. And we can use the portable one while the kitchens being fitted.

Yes, but you have to get a decent one. I have one with actual knobs (not the touch ones) and a decent power supply. All 5 rings run simultaneously, it heats up instantly and cleans in about 30 seconds. I despise gas hobs!
