Navy blue velvet sofa, beigey walls, gold/brass accessories and a mixture of navy blue and ochre cushions

The gas fire is obviously going, we plan to eventually open it up but for now an artificial plant will go on the hearth

Are you talking about the tiles or the wall behind it? Are you keeping the gas fire? Are you keeping the curtains? What about the floor? Will there be a rug?

NotMeNoNo · 07/11/2025 17:39

Either paint to match the wall.
Or leave it in its midcentury glory and replace the electric fire with a more attractive one (this kind of thing) The warm tones of the marble effect tiles won't actually clash with your plans.

Edit - just saw it's a gas fire there now. same point stands!

WonderingWanda · 07/11/2025 17:42

If you could give the floor a sand to lighten it up.Ixd consider a darker colour like a bluey green maybe. Found some images of nice looks that might work wjth blue sofas.

Thank you ! Yes having a jute rug, so it’s beigey, and I mean the tiles, so the whole thing ! Not keeping the curtains no, we haven’t moved in yet, will be having separate roller blinds for each section of glass and then light curtains, off white maybe

Colour options here, not grey though cos it'll just look like a slab of concrete.

Soontobe60 · 07/11/2025 17:58

Honestly - I wouldn’t paint it as such. If it can’t be removed yet, I’d get a joiner to box it in and then paint it. But in reality, I’d just rip it out!

We can’t yet ! So I’m trying to work with it.
what about painting it completely black ?! Is that too much ? And then getting some of those tile stickers to break it up on the hearth?

I wouldn't paint it, I'd do as @Soontobe60 says and rip it out immediately 😆 We inherited a 1970s crazy paved monstrosity when we bought this house last year - it was gone within two weeks.

It’s fugly isn’t it 😆

I'd rip it out, as PPs have said.

Definitely...but your room has some very nice features and will be lovely once the fireplace is gone 😁

MsWilmottsGhost · 07/11/2025 18:25

Well it's not the most attractive of features, but dont paint it, it will just look shit.

If you can't afford to replace it with something nice leave it and work with it. It is the gas fire that really dates it.

Paint the walls in a stronger colour, and strip and varnish the floor in a similar brown tone. Get some pictures up.

Other stuff to look at will draw the eye away, at the moment it is just a big lump in an empty room.

What colour would you suggest for the walls ? I’m scared of clashing with the sofa, it’s gorgeous but very blue !

I’m really trying to keep with the period features but the fireplace is just 😫
I actually like the moulding, I’ll try add a zoomed in pic

I like the pattern here I think it’s arts and crafts ?! The house is about 115 years old

I don't think painting it will be successful.
I don't know if those peel and stick 3D tiles temporarily on top might look better? You can get all sorts, including tiles, brick, etc. I got some smashing tiny green swirly Victorian looking tiles for an upstairs fireplace.
Other than that, I'd take it out. tidy up the hole and paint it as part of the wall, with the plant in front.
Depending on what's underneath the hearth, stain the floorboards to match or put down a painted piece of wood or stick on tiles as a hearth.

Actually, I've just reconsidered after seeing the moulding and the plainer hearth, that chalk paint on the other tiles in the same colour as the wall might work.

Wethers121 · 07/11/2025 18:45

I wouldn’t paint it. I’d change the fire and decorate the rest of the room as planned. I think it will go well. You could always paint it at a later time if you don’t like it once the rest of the room is finished

Survivingnotthriving24 · 07/11/2025 18:52

If you absolutely must paint it/cover it, I'd probably go for just white with everything else you've described but I'm not sure I understand the point of doing all that decorating and ripping out the actual fire to keep it and rip it out in future. It's not a big job.

AnOldCynic · 07/11/2025 18:55

I wouldn’t paint it. I like it.

greybatter · 07/11/2025 18:59

OMG do not paint it or rip it out or vandalise it in any way. It’s absolutely beautiful. There’s probably a real fireplace behind the gas fire.

Bwiblestix · 07/11/2025 19:01

As a temporary measure I would be thinking of painting the hearth black to "identify" it. I'd leave the rest of the tiles alone and fit a false timber mantle (or oak shelf?) to define the top of the fireplace. Once the gas fire isn't there and the full arch of tiles can be seen, it might look quite nice.

You may need to fill in behind the fire once it is out - that could also be painted black.

In it's defence, those old valour gas fires give out the most incredible heat!

justasking111 · 07/11/2025 19:02

I would leave it until you're ready to do the whole room. The floors need doing. You'll probably want extra wall sockets. Get the job and the mess done in one go.
