Navy blue velvet sofa, beigey walls, gold/brass accessories and a mixture of navy blue and ochre cushions

What colour would you suggest for the walls ? I’m scared of clashing with the sofa, it’s gorgeous but very blue !

I like the blues in @WonderingWandas pictures.

I think you need strong colours, not beige sorry.

Some ideas here.

Do I see a mustard yellow in the window? Id be tempted with that on the wall. But I would leave the actual tiles alone and stick a big plant or picture in front of the fire, that's the ugly part.

Go to farrow and ball and upload a picture if your room to try different colours. Try 'Duster 'or ''Indian yellow'.

tapaw · 07/11/2025 19:33

I’d get the whole thing out, fireplace and all.

I would leave it until you're ready to do the whole room. The floors need doing. You'll probably want extra wall sockets. Get the job and the mess done in one go.

All the electrics etc are being done before we move in

Someone with a different user name posted about this fireplace in September. Did you change your username or did you gazzump cocobelon?

I don't think painting it will be successful.
I don't know if those peel and stick 3D tiles temporarily on top might look better? You can get all sorts, including tiles, brick, etc. I got some smashing tiny green swirly Victorian looking tiles for an upstairs fireplace.
Other than that, I'd take it out. tidy up the hole and paint it as part of the wall, with the plant in front.
Depending on what's underneath the hearth, stain the floorboards to match or put down a painted piece of wood or stick on tiles as a hearth.

Actually, I've just reconsidered after seeing the moulding and the plainer hearth, that chalk paint on the other tiles in the same colour as the wall might work.

Edited

do you mean to paint it the same colour as I want the walls ? The walls were going for Portland stone little greene

Whatever you paint it with will look a mess so I would give it good clean and use a large plant. The colour of the tiles tones in with your decor. It will look stylish.

Barnestine · 07/11/2025 19:50

And put some carefully curated logs on the hearth.

tryingtocarpediem · 07/11/2025 19:51

Don’t fights it. Go sludge green and find warm colours to compliment it

My first thought was 1930's art deco, which is suggested by google lens (using your close up photo)

here and here

I wouldn't paint it tbh @missrachael

I think it's in period with the age of the house and the arts and crafts pattern is lovely.
I like the colours.
So, I would ignore existing furniture and trying to match the room to it.

I would rip out gas fire and put in something else (eco wood burner or gas flame effect or whatever you fancy) .
I would then look for a Farrow and Ball /Little Green type brand for a muted tone that picks up the stone colours (but pale) and colour drench the room (so ceiling/walls/skirting one colour).
I would then get the sofa recovered in a muted sage tone fabric and add colour with a fireside rug .

tryingtocarpediem · 07/11/2025 19:59

Oh and what an amazing room. Gorgeous windows and great light!

carpedaim · 07/11/2025 20:01

Don't paint it! It's the gas fire that's the problem, not the fireplace and surround behind it.

missrachael · 07/11/2025 20:11

What do you think we can expect to find behind the taped up parts ?? Never had a proper fireplace before and no idea what to expect !

It is earthy which is what I’m going for with the walls and rug, I want the blue sofa to be the main pop of colour so I don’t think I could go bold with the walls as a pp suggested, I’m not a bold person either anyways I like my neutrals because I’m boring lol

I actually love the fireplace, I just think that awful gas fire is the fugly part. It's way too big.

Your stained glass is gorgeous👌🏼

caringcarer · 07/11/2025 20:17

Honestly I'd just rip it out and get a nicer pre used one to replace it. Obviously if you no longer want gas fire you'd need a Gas Saf person to cap it off and make it safe. I found some really nice fire places on eBay and I have renovated several houses.

frumpy84 · 07/11/2025 20:17

lovely room op. I wouldn’t paint the actual fireplace but I would lean into the sage/ taupe

LibertyLily · 07/11/2025 18:02

I wouldn't paint it, I'd do as @Soontobe60 says and rip it out immediately 😆 We inherited a 1970s crazy paved monstrosity when we bought this house last year - it was gone within two weeks.

Edited

That made me laugh - I remember when my parents put one IN! Height of fashion back then and it had all their brass on it. I wonder if it will ever come back? I have recently purchased a brown chair and a brown checked bedspread. Last time I had these was in the 70’s… everything comes back again eventually 😊

I adore the stained glass, trying to find a way to keep it as it’s all the original windows and single panes with the wooden frames

Brown is all in apparently, all earthy tones replacing greys and blues so I read !

I agree with the others who have said it's the gas fire, not the surround, that's not pretty. I think the tiles themselves are beautiful - I definitely wouldn't paint them but once the gap is there you can decide how you feel better about it, especially with everything else like lights and soft furnishings in the room. I think one big or three smaller houseplants in the gap would be a nice interim filler. Hope you find an awesome real fireplace behind the gas one!

missrachael · 07/11/2025 17:36

The gas fire is obviously going, we plan to eventually open it up but for now an artificial plant will go on the hearth

What a beautiful room
