Navy blue velvet sofa, beigey walls, gold/brass accessories and a mixture of navy blue and ochre cushions

Please keep the tile surround and don't paint or put stickers on them!!!!!

Once that hideous gas fire is gone you will see how gorgeous they are-don't strip out what makes it a beautiful period property and make it some modern soulless identikit room!!! Embrace the original features.

Yes I live in a Victorian semi 😂

Oooh, what floor have you got in your hallway ?!
we have terrazzo in ours which I was really excited about but it’s so dull, I don’t think it’s been cleaned in years !
I do think everyone is right and it’s the gas fire causing the main fuglyness, I have a picture in my head of the hearth covered in plants with different coloured and shaped bases like golds/creams

I love it!!! Keep it and make it a feature (sorry, not the answer you wanted)

Thank you, driving myself insane worrying about colours etc but maybe you’re right and the most ugly thing in the house nah turn out to be my favourite. Next door is the same house but a developer has ripped literally all the originality out of the house which is such a shame

If you're not sure whether the fireplace will work as is why not remove the old gas fire, give the tiles a good scrub and then decorate the rest of the room as you've described and see how it looks? I think it will look fabulous with the colour scheme you've described and a big leafy plant sitting in front of it. If I'm wrong and it doesn't fit in with your colour scheme then you could always paint it later, but I wouldn't do that as a first step because I think there's a risk you'll not like it and it will be very difficult to get it back to its current state so it will need to a rip-out job. Please post after pictures. I love what you have shared of the house, and I am getting invested in your renovations 😂

😆 that’s nice to know you’re invested ! I’m not very experienced with this kind of thing so I’m doubting myself alot. I will 100% be posting pictures if people don’t get sick of me. I’ve never lived in a house like this, it doesn’t feel real to be honest, I just want to do it proud !

Congrats on the house and yes please to pics.

missrachael · 08/11/2025 10:42

Thanks all. Little guidance here please.. These are the plants I’m choosing for the hearth/surround, what do we think?

We’ve got a similar 1930’s fireplace in our back room which I love! It fits in so well with the feel of the house and we’ve got loads of the original features so ripping it out to put in something from a different era felt like the wrong thing to do.

It’s very divisive amongst our friends 🤣

ThePure · 08/11/2025 10:49

We had a very similar one that I kept for years with similar thoughts to PP that it’s original for our 1940s house and therefore should stay even if not to my own taste. I tried to work around it but honestly in the end we did rip it out and I wished I’d done it years ago. Life’s too short to live with fugly things.

Prior to that I didn’t try to paint the tiles because I always find tile paint doesn’t work that well and starts to peel but I painted the wall behind a very similar deep cream colour so that it would blend in and put a big pot plant in front of it.

ThePure · 08/11/2025 10:52

I think getting a big Deco mirror above it is a good call too.

Brown is all in apparently, all earthy tones replacing greys and blues so I read !

I have just painted (well, paid someone else to paint!) our new kitchen walls a warm brown.

Isn’t it an original feature of the house? I think in a few years you will regret removing it.

House was built in 1910 so the fireplace is no way original. It's a thirties addition. I'd have no qualms about ripping it out and replacing with a surround commensurate with the house's age. Do you have any reclamation yards near you?

soupyspoon · 08/11/2025 12:39

missrachael · 07/11/2025 18:34

I like the pattern here I think it’s arts and crafts ?! The house is about 115 years old

I wouldnt paint the tiles, painted tiles always look awful

I would keep it, its in keeping with the house and the colours of the current tiles would complement the colours you have set out

You say you're removing the gas fire so just having a plant in the middle, that is fine then. I wouldnt keep the fire obviously.

missrachael · 08/11/2025 12:39

Even if we do something more with it in the future, like possibly keep the moulding but find a new surround ? For now though it’ll be staying and I’m working with it.
What would be a safe cleaner to use to give it a good scrub??

Thank you, I think they can be a lovely feature if you’re trying to decorate sympathetically to the house which it sounds as if you are ❤️

rwalker · 08/11/2025 12:41

It will look 1000 times better without gas fire
don’t paint it

iI’d say it’s a 1930’s

remove gas fire and lay a fire

it’s probably similar to this

They do but when it not quite right or an addition it draws your eye to what you are trying to hide if that makes sense

I’m thinking of tiling the hearth, well using the stick on tiles, vintage blue and white as the blue will go with the sofa but then that might clash with the olive/sage of the fire surround

rwalker · 08/11/2025 13:42

I think I’m in the minority actually quite like it as it is

Madcats · 08/11/2025 14:04

Before you get the tile adhesive or sledgehammer out, maybe contact a reclamation yard.
