Hob on island? Or sink?

Planning our new kitchen. Will have large rectangular island which looks out through sliding doors up the garden.
We’re considering having either hob ( with in built recirculating extractor thing) or sink on the island (or even both, but probably too squashed). Any other location of these two would be facing away from both the garden view and the social end of the room.
Can anyone share their do’s and don’ts on this? Which to choose?
Do those built-in extractors actually work? Thanks for any advice.

More info needed! Size of room? Floorplan? Size of island?

We have built in extraction induction hobb on our island. The extraction works well, but its a large space, and we have doors we can open too. I like the fact its easy to keep clean and completely flat- clean lines etc.
I know people with sinks in islands and I hate it. The washing up piles around it. Limescale build up around tap. Bits of food etc everywhere.

If I had a choice tbh and decent other space I wouldn't put anything on island.

Ours works for us as I can be social while cooking which I love.

You aren't going to like my answer! I wouldnt put either on an island. Maybe we are just messy, but have them both with a decent backsplash.

Archymum · 02/11/2025 08:55

We have similar to PP with a built in extraction induction hob on island (Bora). Kitchen designer convinced me to put that on our island rather than sink for all the reasons described above- clean lines, no pile of washing up on the island. It was 100% the right call. It creates a much cleaner, calmer feeling in the kitchen.

Geneticsbunny · 02/11/2025 09:07

I assume it will face into the room? So you will never look out of the window whilst cooking and will be stood where you block the view and flow of the room through to the garden?
I guess if you don't cook much it won't matter but I don't think it sounds like a great place for a hob or a sink?

allnewname · 02/11/2025 09:09

Probably need one on the island, as space elsewhere is limited despite it being a big space overall. I’m also leaning towards the hob now, conscious of piles of dirty pots. But also like a view when I wash up!

Neither on the island. The sink just ends up with piles of washing up, drying up, food, water etc and the hobb and extractor are neater in the run on units. Then the island is clutter free.

SemmaLina · 02/11/2025 09:11

Hob , definitely not sink ( piles of washing up etc )
Ideally neither
We eat at ours , looking out at the view

PickleSarnie · 02/11/2025 09:16

We have hob on the island. I love it. I can see everyone so it's much more sociable. The sink, despite best efforts, is always going to gather clutter. I don't want clutter on the island so I'm really glad I put sink along wall and hob on island. Our hob vents out under the floor and it works really well.

Radiator981 · 02/11/2025 09:19

We have nothing on ours and have it at the back, with a backsplash. Having seen both in operation - one in my friend’s bespoke £150k kitchen she has the sink on the island and I’m like noooo! So for example if she’s entertaining the food is in front of the sink and the sink has dishes in it…it just looks grim.

my uncle cooks a lot and has it on the island, it gets a bit chaotic. So yes ideally neither but if you have to choose then deffo the hob.

Kitchenbattle · 02/11/2025 09:23

We have the hob on the peninsula/island and I love it…it’s much more sociable, it’s not a huge huge space but it works well (I think)

Do you have a plan of the kitchen? Someone might come up with a brilliant solution that hasn't been thought of yet?

Seaside3 · 02/11/2025 10:01

We have the hob in the 'open' end of peninsula and sink at the closed end. I love it as it means I can chat to people in the room whilst cooking. Great for mulled wine season too.

I'd go for hob, and invest in a deep sink to hide pots, where ever your sink is.

Team neither. I think people actually spend more time prepping than standing over a hob so if you want to be social keep clear and use for prep.

I just prep right next to the hob, so face put towards people.. Unless it's baking, that's done next to oven, which is behind, but I rarely bake with people around.

WarriorN · 02/11/2025 10:08

I’ve had to place a deep tin planter with plants in behind my island sink due to splashes and water runs just from inevitable drips etc. it sort of acts as a barrier and mop as there’s microfibre cloths beneath it.

I agree that I don’t understand why people do it

WarriorN · 02/11/2025 10:14

I also hate the way that all the washing up sits there. It’s the first thing you see as you enter the room. The ideal is that you’re on top of it; the reality with young kids and busy lives is that it often piles up.

We have a hob in a semi circular island. Works brilliantly!

We have a hob on our peninsular and the sink on a side wall.

Team neither also! We've recently renovated and looked at those downward sucking extractors. We debated ducting it under the floor and outside or getting a recirculating one. I also reviewed those downward extractors and found mixed reviews.

Our original plan was an island, but we went for a larger, peninsular with no sink or hob in it. I use the peninsular for food prep, so its only when I'm actually at the hob that I'm facing away from guests. Do you have a floor plan you could share?

Looks fab. In my weird head I thought you meant the units were semi circular too! But this makes more sense.

HappyAsASandboy · 02/11/2025 15:04

I have an induction hob on my island and my sink under the window.

I like looking in to the room when I’m cooking. I am then facing the kitchen table where kids do homework or sit and chat. And when I am at the sink I can see out to the garden.

In my house cooking happens when others are around and I want to face them. Washing up mostly happens early/late and I am far more likely to be alone than helping with homework or socialising.

I don’t have an extractor fan. The room is big, and mostly it is fine without one (as long as nothing gets left in the oven to burn).

Advocodo · 02/11/2025 16:09

We have a bora hob with down draft vented extraction on our peninsula which faces our garden and guests when we are cooking. Works perfectly, Sink faces a wall away from everyone but that doesn’t matter as we don’t do much washing up.
