Hob on island? Or sink?

Planning our new kitchen. Will have large rectangular island which looks out through sliding doors up the garden.
We’re considering having either hob ( with in built recirculating extractor thing) or sink on the island (or even both, but probably too squashed). Any other location of these two would be facing away from both the garden view and the social end of the room.
Can anyone share their do’s and don’ts on this? Which to choose?
Do those built-in extractors actually work? Thanks for any advice.

You aren't going to like my answer! I wouldnt put either on an island. Maybe we are just messy, but have them both with a decent backsplash.

I came to say this same. A small "extra" sink can be nice on an island, but not your main workhorse one.

A hob ends up without a splashback.

If it is possible to put neither, I'd put neither

Absolutely….the island will become a massive dumping ground….I know from Experience!

So pleased others have this issue. I have to do an island clearance morning and evening. DH is the worst of everyone and leaves the weirdest items, but youngest DC is not far behind. Jar of stick insects anyone? (Thank goodness it's not where our hob is or I'd have fried all sorts of things.)

Mine is going to have a sink, but crucially, the dishwasher and dirty plates are going to stay in the utility room. I know myself too well to think I’d keep on top of washing up! We’re moving the kitchen into the dining room and the current galley kitchen will be a utility room, so I’m leaving the dishwasher where it is and the dirty plates will stay there too. The island sink will therefore be only lightly used.

I also know fine well that if there was a hob in the island, frying etc would spark oil all over the place and it would get sticky. Nope!

Neither.

Use it as a prep table and for serving. You can sit at it with your mug of coffee and mince pie. Have a pull out bin on the working side and electrical sockets on the ends (not the top) under an overhang.

Have cupboard doors and drawers that open from both sides. When I had a peninsula I had doors on the dining side for narrow shelves holding glasses, cookbooks, mugs etc. The working side can have knives, chopping board, oils, vinegars, non-perishable spices, mixer, pans. There might be a spring-loaded rising shelf for a mixer, but I have not seen one recently.

It can be quite tiresome to run pipes, cables and drains to an island, unless you can lift a wooden floor for a cavity, and extraction is less successful in the middle of a room.

Personally I would not feel safe walking across gap with boiling water or hot pans. To be safe hob and sink need to be along worktop from each other. Oven needs to have enough worktop on one side to put down hot pans.

I have a double butler sink in my island and no drainer. It means that stuff either goes straight in the dishwasher below or into the sink. The left one is used to wash in and the right is occasionally used to drain. Because it’s low down the island is always clear. The range is opposite the sink so everything is convenient and I can prep and wash up looking out at the garden

Your kitchen is gorgeous. We are having an island very similar to yours. Can i ask if you have back to back normal sized cupboards? Or is one side smaller? Thanks so much.

Oh thank you. I’m so pleased with the island. It works so well. One side is dishwasher, butler sink with cupboards under and 3 drawers next to that all full depth. The other is half depth cupboards. All really useful and I keep more dining and occasional stuff in that side. I’ve had loads of kitchens and this one works so well. The tap can be accessed from both sides of the island which is massively useful too

My friend has a large rectangle island with a sink. It’s always clear as everything goes into the dishwasher underneath ( and the bin is underneath next to it) . The aga is opposite the sink.
Miscellaneous crap gets dumped on the counters and dressers around the edge of kitchen. Never on the island.
It’s not a sit around design but everyone hangs out round it at parties. It’s useful when people want to “help” clear away or get drinks - feels inclusive. xx

Dragonscaledaisy · 07/11/2025 18:03

Neither. My island is always free of any clutter and is only used for food prep.

To me there’s no competition between induction and gas. I don’t know a single serious cook who doesn’t use gas.

Very outdated view I'm afraid.

@Seaside3 is that a large serving hatch type thing you have in your kitchen?
I love it! We’re completely open plan but looking to move in the next 18 months but
i can’t face all the building work again & have been looking at this as an option, saving pictures on Pinterest!

How does it work for you?

To the bottom left of the photo? No, that's a window. The back door was there, we moved it.

Ha ha sorry you can see I’ve been spending too long on Pinterest! it’s a lovely kitchen!

This is what I’ve been looking at! Just so you don’t think I’m losing my mind!

I have nothing on my island and would design it like that again if I was starting from scratch. I just like it clutter free so it’s one big prep space facing the rest of the room.

I thought having a sink on island would be a compromise, but I actually love it. Can chat to people while I wash up, and that bit behind the sink is always a bit manky but isn't at all when just quartz. Can't imagine just having a featureless island now. There's plenty of room for sitting at it too.

Same.

Igot two dish washers under mine so the sink is never full of pots!

MissFritton65 · 07/11/2025 23:30

I've got a double sink and a smaller prep (champagne) sink in my island. It's never messy as the majority of dishes go straight into the dishwasher which is plumbed in underneath.

I could see why when I looked st the photo, it's not obvious that it's a window. Lovw the hatch idea.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. Never seen one in person that’ll be just like ours. It’s got me excited now.
