Hob on island? Or sink?

Planning our new kitchen. Will have large rectangular island which looks out through sliding doors up the garden.
We’re considering having either hob ( with in built recirculating extractor thing) or sink on the island (or even both, but probably too squashed). Any other location of these two would be facing away from both the garden view and the social end of the room.
Can anyone share their do’s and don’ts on this? Which to choose?
Do those built-in extractors actually work? Thanks for any advice.

As others have said, preferably neither. But if you must have something then certainly not a sink.

Probably need one on the island, as space elsewhere is limited despite it being a big space overall. I’m also leaning towards the hob now, conscious of piles of dirty pots. But also like a view when I wash up!

It won't you be having a dishwasher?

I don't like either on an island, but if necessary to have one then definitely the hob, not the sink.

You aren't going to like my answer! I wouldnt put either on an island. Maybe we are just messy, but have them both with a decent backsplash.

Same! I love the island smooth and usable. Don’t want a hole in it or a hob. Prefer the space and social aspect. But everyone’s different!

Sorry just seen space issues. In which case I’d def do hob on the island, not a big hole that gets wet and full of pots.

We were in the same position of having to choose one or the other @allnewname and went with the sink, partially because I wanted a range cooker which I think look strange in islands. In an ideal world, it would have been neither, but honestly, it's worked out fine. I don't find it particularly messy and we have a sitting area with sofas down at one end (behind where I've taken the photo from), so it still feels pretty sociable.

Hob

Wow, so much advice here, and lovely kitchens to admire. Was busy all day yesterday and didn’t check back in! Will have a proper read through but thank you. And if I can upload a plan I will.

We have hob and sink on double width island in middle of kitchen, 4.5x2.2 meters, and a long bank of floor to ceiling cupboards behind it, all integrated appliances, and love it. Would say that if you are having a flush to ceiling extractor you have to have good ducting out of the kitchen roof. Brilliant whenever having people round for parties etc, all the business is on one side and we can face everyone while working etc. under counter wine fridges also go a long way to catering and free up fridge space. Room for sofa and chairs at end of kitchen where wall of doors open into garden. Same flooring throughout kitchen to patio makes it look bigger as well.

I have an induction hob and cook 3 multicourse meals from scratch and they work beautifully. Extraction units don’t work as well for gas hobs so there will come a time within 5-10 years that you’ll find yourself needing a repaint / kitchen replacement if you cook a lot.

To me there’s no competition between induction and gas. I don’t know a single serious cook who doesn’t use gas.

Even Michelin starred chefs use induction.

Hob, our old house had a beautiful sink in the island and it always looked messy. Do you have the budget for an invisible induction hob?

I guess either you know better than Simon Rogan, Thomas Keller and Jeremy Chan or you're slightly behind the times.

Garamousalata · 04/11/2025 04:54

Once you’ve tried an induction hob, there’s no way back.

Correct. There is no way on this earth I would move voluntarily back to an induction hob. The one we had was awful. Your hand had to be bone dry to use the controls, beeped incessantly at you if the pans weren't perfectly central, went ballistic at you if you dared to lift the pan up briefly, and had 2 temperatures - lucky to get a simmer and inferno. I'm dreading the day gas dissappear and we need to go back to that madness. Fingers crossed they improve before then.

Geneticsbunny · 04/11/2025 08:12

Cheap induction hobs are rubbish but there are a huge range now and there are definitely ones which have a good range of temps now and even have turny knobs like the gas ones if that is what you like. Might be worth revisiting one at some point.

grannycake · 04/11/2025 10:24

I would have preferred neither but space meant that I had to choose I went for an induction hob and it's been great. So easy to clean and my DS is a michelin starred chef who uses induction - both for work and by choice at home

Absolutely….the island will become a massive dumping ground….I know from Experience!

crumpet · 04/11/2025 10:28

As so many have said, induction hob. Doubles as extra worktop space if needed when not in use.

iwantabreakfastpantry · 04/11/2025 10:37

Neither but if it had to be one then the hob.

Definitely not a sink - the worktop will be cluttered and you will have water splashing things or pooling on the counter.
Get a dishwasher and then you will be barely at the sink so won’t mind if there is a wall to look out. I don’t understand why anyone would be staring out of a window whilst washing up anyway.

Mine isn’t a dumping ground, it’s always clear

Mine too. I tidy as I go, no dumping grounds anywhere here

Homegrownberries · 04/11/2025 12:24

Ideally neither but if it has to be one, then the hob.

InvestingNew · 04/11/2025 12:27

Neither.
but if you must, then the hob should on the island. Preferably an induction.

Hopeandglory · 04/11/2025 19:01

I have a sink in the island and 2 dishwashers underneath the island so surface always clear and sink avaliable for use as a large bottle cooler when necessary

loveawineloveacrisp · 04/11/2025 19:11

Sink, with dishwasher also built into island next to sink. Rinse dishes, put straight in dishwasher. No dirty dishes on island. This is what we have.

minipie · 04/11/2025 19:29

Hob definitely and induction definitely. We have a recessed ceiling extractor (Novy Pureline) which works well. This means you get a full size hob - the built in vent hobs don’t leave as much space for pans .

Be careful however if your island is only 90cm deep and you are having bar stools on the opposite side - it’s easy for stuff from the hob to splash that way.

Re dumping ground: having the hob on the island makes me keep it clearer as I need the space for ingredients etc and don’t want it covered in other stuff! If it had no hob or sink it would just get covered in homework, mail, random bits and bobs
