ideally under 1 hour drive to Gatwick in West Sussex so open to suggestions

If your thinking East Sussex, maybe Lewes?

Or if you are looking at West Sussex, would Billingshurst be too small?

I’m more familiar with East Sussex and Kent.

Crowborough is a good bet - decent family homes, good schools and not nearly as pricey as nearby Tunbridge Wells.

Wadhurst is lovely.

It will all depend on your budget.
