electric heater to provide direct warmth to person ,not so much the room

limetrees32 · 19/09/2025 09:35

My partner feels the cold more than I do and is not keen on heated throws .
I'm looking for a directional heater that will warm him up but (hopefully) won't increase the overall temp in the room too much .
Infrared ? Halogen ? No fan heaters because of the noise /
Any advice?

Infrared are the ones that heat the person not the space.

DeanStockwelll · 19/09/2025 09:46

Would a electricity blanket be the best option?
You can get small ones that just cover his legs / go around his shoulders.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 19/09/2025 09:48

Infrared, I gave a curved one for when I work from home in the winter and it keeps me toasty. Going to loo is a trauma though as it’s freezing.

MagpiePi · 19/09/2025 09:50

What about a heated gilet?

limetrees32 · 19/09/2025 13:26

Thanks to all . He,s not the easiest of people and won't wear a heated gilet and in fact it's his legs he complains about .
I think infrared is the way to go .

I have this one too and it’s very cheap to run. Got it from Amazon

Infrared again.👍

Remember the reception at my old workplace was very cold in winter due to being large, high ceiling, constant door opening etc and the poor receptionist was always complaining of being cold.
A infrared heater was fitted to the wall some distance away but in direct line to where she sat.
She said it was a game changer and she was at last comfortable yet if she were to move without redirecting the heater, she was cold again.

@OhamIreally and @Tiredofwhataboutery ideally I'd like one that could go on the floor in front of his chair but I think the recommendation is that they are not put on carpet .
How do you use yours ?

Mines is freestanding so can go on carpet. I actually have it on a low table behind me when working and because it’s curved it’s like a hug. It’s a bit like the heat you get from bright sunshine on a chilly day. I have a plug in electric foot warmer too and between them I am lovely and toasty.

@Tiredofwhataboutery thank you SO much ,that's enormously helpful .
More than I wanted to spend but it fits the bill best and sometimes it's not wise to economise on things like this .
I'm off to click that button !

Tiredofwhataboutery · 19/09/2025 17:41

@limetrees32 It isn’t cheap and I dithered whether to buy another cheapie fan heater. It is much more economical to run and silent which is good for calls . I bought mines 4 years ago and still going strong do I think it balances out over the years

Ha ha yes this is the same one I have. I researched for ages as I wanted something cheap to run. It sits under my desk at home for when I work from home. I hate being cold but didn’t want to have the central heating on all day.

I think it’s just the thing for your DH.

limetrees32 · 21/09/2025 19:44

Yes , I'm excited for it's arrival!

So far it's great success.
He's warm and we don't have to have the heating on and the whole room boiling.

You definitely need an electric over blanket. I adore mine in the winter - costs about 5p an hour to run.
